The Carver County Sheriff's Office is looking for an experienced, dedicated, and dynamic Jail Commander to oversee our correctional facility and ensure that it operates smoothly, securely, and in full compliance with regulations. Under the direction of the Chief Deputy the Commander provides senior level leadership, supervision, and direction and control within various divisions of the Sheriff's Office. The Commander assumes responsibility for the managing, planning, and coordinating of the operations and personnel of the Jail directly or through the Assistant Jail Administrator. Performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature and special projects as assigned.
In-person interviews will be held at the Carver County Justice Center, 606 E 4th Street, Chaska, MN on Thursday, May 15.• Coordinates and directs all administrative and operational activities of the Jail, including the Juvenile Detention Facility (JDC).
• Responsible for personnel management and supervision of employees which includes; creating and maintaining a rewarding and productive work environment through recognizing employee achievement, initiating and authorizing the placement of commendation in employees personnel files, training and performance evaluation goals, directing employee work assignments, conducting, reviewing and signing performance evaluations, reviewing and signing employee timecards, authorizing schedule changes and time off requests, analyzing personnel problems, develop solutions and promote staff conflict resolution, creating and managing performance improvement plans, evaluating, implementing and approving progressive discipline from oral reprimands to suspension when appropriate, responding to employee grievances, provide guidance and constructive criticism regarding work performance and establish work tasks and assign employees to perform and complete the tasks.
• Responsible for investigating or directing the investigation of complaints from division staff, the general public and other agencies served by the Sheriff's Office using knowledge of state statutes, laws, employee labor agreements, county and Sheriff's Office policies and procedures and recommend disposition of said complaints.
• Responsible for managing the interviewing and selection process of new employees. Participate in and make recommendations during supervisory promotional processes.
• Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with the DOC, county departments, law enforcement agencies, and other correctional facilities for the Sheriff's Office.
• Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminology, Corrections, Criminal Justice, Social/Behavior Sciences, Public Administration or a related field.
• Eight (8) years of criminal justice experience, three (3) of which must be at the supervisory level.
• A valid Minnesota driver's license or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.
• Successful completion of 10-12-week Police Staff and Command program within 3 years of hire.
• BCA Management Series Certification within two (2) years of employment.
• Successful completion of the MSA Institute for Credible Leadership Development (ICLD) certification (Phase I, II, III, IV) within 4 years of hire.All applications will be screened for minimum qualifications, scored and ranked. The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews). Top candidates successfully passing the oral interview(s) will be sent to the background process. Conditional offers will be made to those candidates successfully passing the background, with the number of offers being proportionate to the number of vacancies. Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), reference checks, CJIS background investigation, leadership assessment, and pre-placement physical.
