What are the responsibilities and job description for the Highway Maintenance Operator position at Carver County?
The Highway Maintenance Operator provides skilled, semi-skilled and manual labor in the maintenance, reconstruction, building and repair of County highways, bridges, parks, fairgrounds, courthouse and all county properties. Most work is performed outside, often in hazardous and inclement weather. Work includes weekend, nights, holidays as required by weather and maintenance conditions. Most work is performed independent of technical supervision. Maintains and repairs highways and bridges in both rural and suburban areas. Participates in improvement projects to highways and all county owned properties and buildings. Performs maintenance and diagnostics of vehicles, equipment and performs minor repairs. Also subject to 24/7 call out availability for all types of highway maintenance issues.
This position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing under 49 CFR Part 382 and 49 CFR Part 40.
•Safely operates light and heavy equipment in a constantly changing environment to perform highway and bridge maintenance functions.•Performs related skilled, semi-skilled, and manual labor to maintain parks, county buildings, public drainage systems, and other public works projects as required.
•Assists in county traffic services which include assisting in sign making operations, installation of new signs and posts, and repair of existing signs.
•Performs "call-out" assignments as required. They may be called upon to call others to come in to work in the absence of the foreman, and the superintendent.
•Performs truck driver safety inspections as required by Minnesota Law.
•Performs maintenance on all types of light and heavy equipment.
•Performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature as assigned.•High school diploma or GED.
•Requires an approved valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake and satisfactory driving record including no more than two moving violations within the last three years. Must obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and tanker endorsement within probationary period of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
•1-3 years experience in highway maintenance and construction work including operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, other vehicles, and equipment related to highway maintenance and construction. Some basic knowledge of hazardous materials and some basic knowledge of work zones.
