The Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation and assigning appropriate medical codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services provided by primary care healthcare professionals. This role ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines and supports accurate billing processes for timely reimbursement.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Code Assignment: Assign and sequence appropriate ICD-10-CM, CPT, CPT II, and HCPCS codes based on clinical documentation and coding guidelines.
2. Documentation Review: Verify and cross-check medical records and documentation for completeness and compliance with coding regulations.
3. Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, nurses, and administrative staff to clarify documentation and ensure accurate code assignment.
4. Compliance Adherence: Stay updated on regulatory changes from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), as well as other insurance providers, to ensure compliance with all coding policies.
5. Denial Management: Collaborate with billing and accounts receivable teams to address coding-related claim denials and resubmissions, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
6. Professional Development: Maintain certification by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in continuing education opportunities.
Qualifications:
· Certification: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent certification required.
· Experience: Minimum of 2 years of medical coding experience in a primary care setting preferred.
· Technical Skills: Proficiency in coding software and EHR systems (e.g., eCW, Allscripts, AthenaOne).
· Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail in coding and documentation review.
· Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals and administrative teams.
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to sit for extended periods and work at a computer.
· Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
