Position Summary

The Medical Assistant at Casa de Salud embraces our model of providing primary care with love and dignity for all in an environment that is especially responsive to low-income, Spanish-speaking and marginalized residents of Albuquerque, Los Lunas, and surrounding communities.

Medical Assistants at Casa de Salud support clinicians to provide high quality acute and chronic healthcare to clients, as well as perform a range of office-based medical procedures to support clinic flow and patient communications. They work with patients dealing with opioid use disorder and who are prescribed buprenorphine medication treatment as well as with those seeking gender-affirming care and harm reduction services.

The Medical Assistant works under close supervision of the Clinical Manager and works closely with the Senior Clinic Flow Coordinator and Medical Scheduler.

The following encompasses the general scope and role of the Medical Assistant:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Modeling professional behavior, high level of safety, and performance as measured by punctuality, integrity, consistency and mastery of duties and responsibilities.
  • Actively participating in daily huddles, monthly staff meetings, and weekly clinical operations team meetings.
  • Teaching health apprentices specific clinical skills and providing feedback to staff for use in program management decisions
  • Serving as a role model and mentor to apprentices, navigating weekly apprentice staffing
  • Providing apprentices with constructive feedback
  • Patient registration, scheduling, over-the-phone communication, clinical documentation, use of an electronic medical records system, patient fee collection
  • Obtaining patient vital signs, providing harm reduction supplies to clients, performing blood draws and point of care lab tests, performing EKGs and other procedures, rooming patients, stocking supplies, prepping/cleaning exam rooms on a daily basis
  • Supporting clinicians with flow, restocking, and patient care needs including referrals/follow up
  • Supporting the work of the Strong Roots program for people dealing with addictions
  • Representing Casa de Salud at events and in meetings as requested

Minimum Qualifications for this position:

  • Eligibility: MA accredited program or 5 years experience
  • Ability to commit 40 consistent hours a week to this position (with flexibility based on needs of the organization if apprentices or staff are out, or if evening hours are needed)
  • Ability and excitement to serve as a role model to health apprentices, provide leadership at Casa, grow, and model excellence and professionalism

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. The essential knowledge, skills, abilities and experiences listed below are required.

  • Passionate team player with great attention to detail and a demonstrated background in multitasking and managing high priority tasks in a timely manner.
  • Experience in problem-solving, exercising sound judgment, maintaining confidentiality and the ability to interact professionally and effectively with co-workers, clients, and the general public.
  • Ability to complete assignments and responsibilities accurately and in a timely manner, often with strict and/or conflicting deadlines.
  • Strong ethics and a high level of personal and professional integrity.
  • Must be fluent in proper spoken & written English and Spanish for a medical environment.
  • Able to effectively present information, respond to questions in a timely manner, and professionally interact with directors, managers, clinicians, staff, apprentices and patients.
  • Self-driven and able to anticipate needs and execute tasks without heavy supervision.
  • Excellent time management skills and a history of managing tasks that recur on daily, weekly, monthly, and longer timeframes without missing deadlines.
  • Interested in problem solving and comfortable dealing with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Open and effective communicator, excellent interpersonal skills, and a willingness and interest in expressing ideas and proposing changes to improve and streamline procedures & systems.
  • Interested in identifying and implementing system improvements for performance and efficiency.

While performing duties of this position, the employee is required to sit and stand for extended periods of time, type, use a trackpad or mouse, walk, use and/or handle standard office and medical equipment, and communicate verbally and in writing with other staff. The employee will occasionally be required to lift and/or move office and medical equipment and furniture. Repetitive motion of upper body required. Vision correctable to 20/20 and hearing.

Casa de Salud requires annual COVID-19 and Flu vaccinations. To protect our community, we also mandate wearing masks while working in the clinic.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $26.00 per hour
