CASA & CASA IN ACTION SYNOPSIS:

CASA has a sister organization, CASA in Action, a separate, but related, nonprofit organization that is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code.  Although CASA and CASA in Action share a common goal of supporting immigrants and low-income people in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Georgia, they are separate organizations with their own board of directors.  A set of employees at the two organizations, including the person filling this position, shares their time between the two organizations.  This has no effect on salary or benefits.

DEPARTMENT SYNOPSIS:

CASA’s Services Department in Pennsylvania operates 3 Welcome Centers in York and Lancaster Counties. At the Welcome Centers, community members can join CASA Pennsylvania and engage in organizing opportunities while receiving services including employment, vocational training, health, English classes, and legal services. Vocational training opportunities offered by CASA are designed to facilitate the acquisition of a trade certification while CASA’s Life Skills ESOL (in English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program uses Popular Education to address the educational needs of its adult learners. Lessons are focused on concrete and practical everyday experiences. Students, as adults, come to class with experiences they are encouraged to share and peer teach while performing tasks. Class materials are geared toward student’s life experiences and promote civic engagement and community empowerment. The classes also serve and empower students to make positive and long-lasting social change within their community in coordination with CASA’s organizing and advocacy efforts in the fight for immigration reform, workers’ rights, universal equality, and social justice. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Workforce Development Coordinator will perform a range of duties to ensure the effective delivery of workforce and adult continuing education for CASA members and will primarily focus on assisting CASA members in the development of their workforce skills. This includes coordinating the delivery of ESOL programming in the region in accordance with CASA’s standardized ESOL curriculum and supported by CASA’s Education Department. The Coordinator will assess the workforce needs of ESOL graduates as well as other CASA members in order to identify vocational training or other workforce skill development opportunities that may benefit them, occasionally coordinating such trainings in house when needed. The Coordinator may be expected to coordinate 5 - 8 courses per quarter in addition to individualized technical assistance provided throughout the week.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, establish and coordinate training opportunities according to the market’s demand for employers and employees in York County.
  • Conduct job development and job search activities directed toward positions that are individualized to the interests and uniqueness of the York Welcome Center.
  • Conduct individualized workforce needs assessments and resume writing assistance
  • Work in collaboration with AmeriCorps, and develop plans to provide AmeriCorps members the opportunity to support activities related to the Workforce Development Program.
  • Support and implement the development and expansion of the membership program.
  • Ensure that members understand and join CASA’s model by combining services and organizing to build community power.
  • Participate actively in the annual planning process, including developing and executing individual work plans, evaluating and providing feedback on plans as the year progresses.
  • Meet deadlines established by the supervisor and individual work plan.
  • Think creatively about ways to improve further his/her specific job and CASA as an organization.
  • Assist with the recruitment of ESOL teachers, vocational training instructors and volunteers.
  • Organize, administer and record results of standardized language assessments and student surveys; track program data and progress as required by funders and departmental priorities.
  • Conduct community outreach and advertisement of course offerings
  • Recruit, register, add and drop students while keeping master class list updated and enter all relevant data into Salesforce for recordkeeping and reporting purposes.
  • Collect and record class registration payments and textbook sales.
  • Provide onsite support to teachers and students; monitor teacher supplies and materials.
  • Participate actively in the annual planning process, including developing and executing individual work plans, and evaluating and providing feedback on plans as the year progresses.
  • Promote CASA membership and services; collaborate with other CASA departments and programs to ensure that members enjoy an excellent experience with CASA such that they can contribute to building the power of the immigrant community.
  • Provide quality customer service, interactions and responses to all members, partner organizations, vendors, visitors, callers and any other individual or organization you may encounter in your role with CASA.
  • Think creatively about ways to improve further his/her specific job and CASA as an organization.
  • Participate in CASA actions, mobilizations, and events as needed and required; recruit students to participate.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor related to position.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

  • Bachelor's degree required or comparable experience, advanced degree a plus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, French is a plus.
  • Valid US Driver’s License and reliable vehicle.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Deep commitment to social change and to growing CASA as a membership organization in which members have decision-making authority.
  • Strong proficiency in English and Spanish, both spoken and written; proficiency in French a plus
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel and other databases, and willingness to learn other needed computer programs.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, conflict resolution and negotiation skills; able to work efficiently and effectively in a high-stress environment
  • Demonstrated experience in project coordination.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple ongoing projects.
  • Experience in technical/vocational training/education projects, knowledge of construction trade skills.
  • Experience working with low-skilled immigrant populations and with adult learners who have limited or interrupted formal education
  • Knowledgeable regarding Popular Education and other Adult Education methodologies
  • Energetic and creative with a can do attitude
  • Extremely punctual and able to meet programmatic deadlines
  • General cash handling and accounting skills to collect and accurately record monies
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid US driver’s license
  • Must be comfortable driving passengers in a van and/or driving community members in personal vehicle from time to time

Who is eligible?

  • All full time and part time permanent positions working 20 hours or more per week.
