Position Overview:
Why Not You Academy (WNYA) is a small, mission-driven charter school seeking caring and culturally competent Substitute Teachers to provide short-term coverage for high school classes. We are looking for educators who are committed to embracing students where they are, building relationships, and helping them grow in a supportive, close-knit community. With small class sizes and a strong focus on individual student needs, our substitutes play an essential role in maintaining the school’s nurturing environment. Those who demonstrate strong classroom management and instructional skills will be considered for long-term substitute opportunities.
Essential Functions:
- Foster a Positive Learning Environment: Establish and maintain an inclusive, respectful classroom that celebrates diversity and fosters student engagement. Help students feel supported as they navigate their academic journey.
- Instructional Delivery: Implement prepared lesson plans, adapting them as necessary to meet the unique needs of our diverse student body. Provide individualized attention to students, ensuring they have the resources they need to succeed.
- Classroom Management: Maintain a calm, structured learning environment by guiding student behavior in a positive, respectful manner. Support students with varying levels of academic achievement and social-emotional development.
- Student Engagement: Work closely with students to support their academic growth, offering encouragement, patience, and personalized instruction. Take advantage of the school’s small class sizes to engage with students on a deeper level.
- Cultural Competence: Respect and embrace the diverse backgrounds of students. Demonstrate a commitment to creating an equitable learning environment where all students feel valued and understood.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall function of the school.
- Long-term substitute opportunities may be offered to candidates in good standing who demonstrate strong instructional and classroom management skills.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or valid emergency sub certificate. Experience working with high school students in culturally and economically diverse settings is highly preferred.
- Certification: Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate or Substitute Teaching Certificate is required.
- Clearances: Successful completion of Criminal Justice Fingerprint and Background Clearance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge: Understanding of classroom management techniques and effective instructional strategies in diverse settings. Familiarity with educational technology, such as Google Classroom, Skyward, and Edmentum, is helpful but not a primary focus.
- Skills: Excellent interpersonal communication skills, with an emphasis on building relationships and fostering a welcoming environment for all students.
- Abilities: Adaptability in working with a diverse range of students. Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain flexibility in a close-knit school community.
Working Conditions:
- Ability to manage a variety of student needs in a calm, nurturing manner.
- May be required to provide first aid and manage potential exposure to student health issues.
Compensation:
Substitute teachers are compensated at a rate of $28 per hour, with opportunities for long-term placements based on performance.
