DEFINITION AND ROLE :

The Medication Technician is responsible for providing medication services according to written directions prepared by a Physician and under the supervision of a Nurse. This position requires the knowledge, ability, qualifications, and skills to provide medication administration assistance within the scope of services of the facility, meet resident needs, and ensure the safety and health of a resident. A Medication Technician must be 18 years of age or older, meet the training requirements in 706 B4, and have a minimum of three months of health-related experience preferably in a similar setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES :

  • Assumes cheerful and positive attitude while providing care services, rehabilitative and supportive services as assigned by the Nurse and necessary to provide competent care.
  • Engages in conversation with residents that is neither personal nor controversial in nature.
  • Respects confidentiality of both the resident and the Cascades.
  • Assists residents with administration or self-administration of medications as directed by physician’s orders and per facility policy and procedure.

Assist in the self-administration of daily medications, either prescription on non-prescription.

  • Follow written or verbal instructions on how to manage medications.
  • Accurately record medication dosages and times.
  • Observe patients and document and report changes in their condition to the nurse and / or physician.
  • Ensure equipment is routinely inspected and cleaned.
  • Uphold all health and safety standards.
  • Respond to emergency calls to identify resident needs.
  • Assists in activities of daily living as needed and allowable by census / acuity.
  • Able to suggest techniques to the resident how best to maintain or improve independence in these functions and encourage participation in facility activities.
  • Maintains current and accurate clinical records and any required documentation.
  • Communicates to Nurse any changes in the physical, cognitive, and / or emotional status of the resident and / or family, unusual occurrences, safety concerns, malfunctioning equipment, resident / family noncompliance with service plan, etc.  This can include such things as :
  • Any knowledge that a Cascades associate accepts compensation or private employment from resident / family / caregiver

  • Any verbal  reference to suicide whether serious or not
  • Any mentioned  legal action by resident / family / caregiver, physician, or attorney
  • Any occurrence or observation that The Cascades associate believes involves actual or potential harm to a resident.
  • Attends in-service training as required.
  • Maintains certifications as required, including first aid, CPR, fingerprint card, TB test.
  • Will not supervise more than two assistant caregivers at one time.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Must be certified to the level of service of licensure of Cascades by a caregiver training program approved by the NCIA & ALFM board and provides documentation of certification.
  • Specific skills competency evaluation and testing done upon hire and during orientation to provide expected services.
  • Is physically capable of performing the job related duties.
  • Is able to provide dependable transportation as required by the nature of the position.
  • Current first aid and CPR certification; current TB test; drug-free.
  • Current in fingerprinting and holds approved Class A card.
  • Type and duration of education enabling ability to provide expected level of service :

  • Certified by an approved entity through the level of care provided by the facility.
  • Certification must be current.
