Case Western Reserve University is committed to providing a transparent estimate of the salary range available for this position at the time of its posting. The salary range is between $52,705 and $66,672, depending on qualifications, experience, department budgets, and industry data.

Job Description


POSITION OBJECTIVE
Working under general supervision, extract reporting and marketable insights by performing
sophisticated data analytics from the research data collected in the lab. The Data Science Specialist will
apply principles of business analytics, data visualization, and data storytelling for reporting and
publicizing the cutting-edge research conducted in the lab to comply with reporting requirements
and to maintain a strong web presence of the lab.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Participate in strategy and planning meetings with the principal investigator and the research
team to ascertain data and reporting needs and actions associated with highlighting the
potential impact of research projects. Devise methods for identifying data patterns, trends in
available information sources using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques.
Determine and recommend additional data collection and reporting requirements. (20%)
2. Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to assess and produce relevant, standard,
or custom information (reports, charts, graphs and tables) from structured data sources by
querying data repositories and generating the associated information. (25%)
3. Distribute and disseminate reports to applicable agencies, researchers, management and
other internal end-users. Additionally, apply data analytics, machine learning, and data
visualization techniques to draw marketing and publicity-oriented insights and build a story
for online presence. (25%)
4. Regularly publish stories on the research lab's website. Conduct publicity using social media
channels, collect statistics on reach and return on investment, and report to the principal
investigator. (10%)
5. Lead the implementation of data standards and common data elements for data collection in
the research lab. Additionally, serve as a resource for non-routine inquiries such as requests
for statistics or surveys. (10%)


NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. May be assisted in work by a technician or student helper. Interact with the appropriate
research associate and/or graduate student to train them utilize the tools being used in the
assigned project. Work with undergraduate researchers on the team. (5%)
2. Update job knowledge by studying state-of-the-art machine learning, data analytics, and
data visualization tools. Participate in educational opportunities, reading professional
publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.

CONTACTS
Department: Weekly contact with the assistant vice president, sponsored projects. Daily contact
with the associate director, sponsored projects accounting, grant managers and accountants,
and other office accounting staff. Weekly contact with pre-award office staff.
University: Daily contact with management center representatives, department administrators
and faculty. Occasional contact with the Office of General Counsel. Weekly contact with
controller's office and accounts payable/procurement services. Occasional contact with audit
services.


External: Weekly contact with sponsor agencies (federal, non-federal) and peers at other
universities. Monthly contact with sub-recipient organizations.
Students: Occasional contact with work-study students.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.


QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and 4 years of relevant experience or Master's
degree. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as business, analytics, economics, finance,
statistics or engineering.


REQUIRED SKILLS
1. Has knowledge of data manipulation in python, SQL, Microsoft Excel.
2. Ability to utilize data visualization tools such as Tableau and PowerBI.
3. Experience with employing machine learning models.
4. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
5. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
6. Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students,
aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff
policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
7. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
8. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face. Must be able to
clearly relay information to the center director and other researchers and prepare reports as
needed.


WORKING CONDITIONS
The working conditions are typical of an office environment and computer rooms. There will be
no exposure to hazards. The work requires negligible physical exertion, however, limited
manual dexterity is required.
