POSITION OBJECTIVE

As a member of the Research and Engagement Services Team, the Student Success Librarian is crucial in leading the Kelvin Smith Library to create adaptable and inclusive instruction and engagement programming for a range of audiences and in a range of environments, including both in-person and online. The ideal candidate works to apply and enhance their expertise in library instruction, outreach, and assessment. They will actively partner on campus-wide student-success initiatives and demonstrate a passion for developing innovative, inclusive, and multi-modal approaches to library instruction and programming. The successful candidate must thrive in a collaborative team environment and be committed to best practices in effective and inclusive pedagogy. The Student Success Librarian serves as a member of the KSL Leadership Team.

Essential Functions

  • Make decisions on a strategic basis; provide expertise in library instruction and programming and applied best practices. Deliver engaging information literacy sessions to diverse audiences, including classroom instruction and outreach to visiting groups, and lead the charge in integrating innovative technologies (i.e., AI literacy) and advanced techniques into instruction practices. Actively advocate for the adoption of new teaching practices among colleagues; champion a student-centered approach and share this expertise with fellow instructors. Incorporate inclusive pedagogy and other instructional best practices for multiple teaching modalities; collaborate with colleagues to design, develop, assess, and establish best practices and standards of all instruction and instructional materials, including LibGuides, instructional videos, and Canvas modules. Actively select materials for library collection that support pedagogy, teaching, and student learning; stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices in library instruction, assessment, and outreach; maintain and demonstrate knowledge about library emerging issues and trends and the library's vital role within the academic community. Understand and articulate organizational positioning, strategic alignment, change management, and leadership. Communicate effectively and employ general management theories and practices. (28%)
  • Initiate and welcome invitation to collaborate on projects related to student success across campus, including developing instruction and engagement programming for first-year, first-generation, international, and transfer students with campus partners; develop and lead student orientation programming; serve as liaison to targeted support offices such as Undergraduate Advising, Student Government Association, and EXPLORE (first-year experience), etc.; collaborate and partner effectively internally and externally to the organization to pursue opportunities for a diverse campus community. (20%)
  • Conduct and facilitate engaging workshops on digital, data, AI, and information literacy topics; develop and implement outreach initiatives to promote library programming, resources, and services; communicate and promote new and existing library resources and services through a range of channels, including in-person and through print, online, and other media. (14%)
  • Contribute as a member of the KSL Leadership Team by sharing expertise and vision that supports KSL strategic initiatives in collaboration with KSL Leaders. Serve as Chair of the KSL Instruction Committee to develop best practices for KSL and standards for instruction and assessment and foster collaboration with KSL's library instructors that encourages, develops, and facilitates the integration of information and digital literacy initiatives for undergraduate and graduate instruction. (9%)
  • Assess classroom instruction sessions and workshops and asynchronous instruction materials across all areas; collect and analyze assessment data to assess student learning outcomes and evaluate effectiveness of instruction program; partners with colleagues to develop assessment projects to gain insight into student populations and student programming at the library (9%)
  • Provide research help services through on-call, consultation, and chat services (6%)
  • Contribute to the library, the institution, and the profession through sustained and progressive scholarship, creative expression, and service at the state, regional, national, or international level. (6%)
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a work culture of inclusion, diversity, equity and belonging. (6%)


Non-essential Functions

  • Serve on CWRU Libraries committees, task forces, and working groups routinely. (1%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)


CONTACTS

Department: Regular contact with the Research and Engagement Services Team Leader to ensure excellent service (31-45%). Moderate contact with staff at all levels of the organization to support the provision of library services (16-30%). Occasional contact with managers and staff of other units in the library as required by projects (6-15%).

University: Frequent consultation with faculty, faculty committees, and other department administrators to determine teaching and research informational requirements to make appropriate information management decisions, instruction, and reference consultation (46-65%). Work moderately with faculty to develop, review, and improve information literacy practices and their integration into the classroom (16-30%). Consult occasionally with other campus librarians to coordinate information management decisions for the provision of library services (6-15%). Consult regularly with staff throughout the university to develop and implement programs for the delivery of services to students and faculty (31-45%).

External: Participate occasionally in local, regional, and national organizations to maintain a network of informational professionals (6-15%). Infrequent to occasional collaboration with colleagues in OhioLINK and other academic libraries. Infrequent to occasional contact with vendors to support print and electronic resource selections in assigned subject areas (up to 5%).

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may supervise nonexempt staff, student employees, and temporary full or part-time workers.

Qualifications

Experience: The initial rank of the research and engagement librarian will be based upon the qualifications of the individual regarding that person's professional knowledge, abilities, and skills; contributions to the profession through service and scholarly endeavors; and professional qualities consistent with university and library values.

Education and Experience: Master's degree in library science or relevant area; 6 years of appropriate experience may be required or preferred; 2nd advanced degree may be required or preferred.

  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.


WORKING CONDITIONS

General office/library environment.

This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangement up to two remote days per week at the discretion of the department. New employees may begin a hybrid schedule upon approval from the supervisor, successful completion of an orientation period and signing the remote work checklist certification form.
