JOB KNOWLEDGE

Provides high-quality exams in a caring environment and is responsible for using MRI medical equipment to image patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings. May specialize in gynecologic, abdominal, neuro, orthopedic, breast, prostate, cardiac, and pediatric imaging. Ensure the safety of the patient before and during the exam.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs MR exams.
  • Keeps up to date on new techniques.
  • Working knowledge of MR systems and auxiliary equipment.
  • Performs venipuncture for contrast exams.
  • Interview and screen patients before the exam.
  • Ensures the safety of the patient throughout the exam process.
  • Ensures patients' hearing is protected from acoustic noise.
  • Maintains patient safety by keeping updated on contraindications, safety risks, and hazards.
  • Knowledge of resources available to check for contraindications for MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) exams.
  • Explain the exam in detail to the patient.
  • Knows the protocol for medicating claustrophobic patients and works with patients to alleviate anxiety and emotional distress.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains certification through continuing education, with 15 credits biannually pertaining strictly to MR and breast MR.
  • Works with radiologists to obtain protocols pertinent to patients’ clinical history.
  • Informs supervisor of low supplies.
  • Maintains Quality Assurance program.
  • Takes after-hours call and holidays.
  • Transfer patient's records to PACS and EHR.
  • Must be familiar with patient scheduling, workflow maintenance, and throughput.
  • Stay current on MRI safety risks and steps for preventing ferromagnetic objects from entering the MRI suite.


Education:
Associate in radiological technology from an accredited X-ray technologic program. Current state X-ray technology certificate or license. BLS certified.

Experience: Minimum one or more years of experience and training in either Radiology, MRI, or CT


Other Requirements:

American Registry of Radiologic Technologist registration is required.

Must comply with all duties, policies, and requirements of Outpatient Radiology and applicable agencies

Condition of Employment

Some medical diagnoses and implants may make working around the Magnetic Resonance fields difficult or impossible. They can pose a safety issue for yourself, your device, or those around you. Examples of these devices are but are not limited to aneurysm clips, hearing aids, cochlear implants, pacemakers, and ICDs. Diseases include uncontrolled seizure disorder, A fib, syncope, or if you are on any medications that might alter your mental clarity.


Knowledge:

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, instrumentation, fundamental physics, patient care, and medical ethics.

Knowledge of safety, infection control, and quality improvement practices to establish a safe work environment.

Attention to detail and ability to focus in a fast-paced environment.

Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.

Technical competency.

Skills in situational awareness and safety


Abilities:

Explain technical procedures to patients in a user-friendly manner.

Calm patients who may be nervous about the procedure.

Use correct body mechanics/ergonomics to assist patients appropriately.

Work both in a team setting and independently with minimal supervision.

Multi-task efficiently and effectively.

Establish effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, management, and peers.

Competently use Microsoft Office, PACS and EMR


Equipment Operated:
3-T MRI Machine, 1.5T MRI Machine, Programs and software related to MRIs.



Work Environment: Combination of exam rooms and tech console area. In some situations, it may work in close quarters. MRI equipment. Exposure to disease, radiation, biohazard materials, and toxic chemicals while performing job duties. The MRI environment is considered very dangerous; some implants and physical conditions may make it difficult or impossible for you to work around the Magnetic Resonance field.

Physical Requirements: Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks usually associated with the radiology field, such as standing six to eight hours daily. It involves bending, stooping, squatting, reaching above the shoulders, twisting, turning, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Heavy lifting of 75 lbs. is required to move equipment and transfer patients—occasional stress when working with anxious patients or difficult exams.


The pay range for this role is:

32 - 42 USD per hour(OPR - Scottsbluff)
