What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coordinator, Emergency Department position at Cass Regional Medical Center?
Primary Purpose: Assist with the overall unit management and the delivery of quality nursing care to achieve optimal patient outcomes, act as charge nurse when necessary, serve as preceptor for new nurses being oriented to the units, provide patient care if needed and assume director role in absence of Emergency Department Director. Will take call as indicated to have some 24/7 coverage to meet staffing and patient care requirements. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate the daily/monthly/annual tasks and responsibilities associated with the Emergency Department Coordinator role. Assist the Director with education, training/performance evaluation and development as well as preparation and delegation of work schedules and work flow. Develops and maintains schedule for all staff in the Emergency Department.
Formal Policy-Setting Responsibilities: Formally responsible for providing input into policies associated with the job's purpose and essential responsibilities. Complete assigned responsibilities within established hospital, unit specific guidelines, policies and procedures, standards, protocols, etc.
Routine Decision Making: Evaluate and adjust work flow issues on a daily basis. Assists staff in development of problem solving and decision-making skills. Uses research/current literature in the provision/supervision of evidence-based care. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth.
Formal Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises care provided by maintaining high visibility to patients/families, other health care team members and staff of other departments.
Required Knowledge: Knowledge of clinical assessment skills, disease process, knowledge of hospital policies and procedures along with The Joint Commission knowledge. Ability to use a computer, good communication skills, demonstrates respect, compassion and cultural sensitivity to patients/families and other hospital employees. Give input and discuss performance evaluations of staff with Emergency Department Director. Serve as professional role model, teacher and resource person.

Education and Certification/ Registration required for the Position: Registered Nurse with current nursing license in the state of Missouri. Prefer BSN or willing to acquire. BLS/ACLS/PALS, TNCC, & NIHSS stroke certification required.
Assesses, Plans, implements and evaluates daily workflow:
1. Ensures adequate staffing is maintained on a daily basis for unit. Identifies potential areas of need on the schedules and develops a plan to resolve the need.
2. Provide clinical support to unit on a 24/7 basis. Act as charge nurse when necessary, serve as preceptor for new nurses being oriented to the units.
3. Monitor and document on daily/monthly audit logs to ensure compliance with regulatory readiness.
4. Assist Emergency Department Director with daily staff and patient rounds, providing constructive feedback to staff on an as needed basis.
5. Utilizes AIDET (acknowledge, introduce, duration, explain and thank) initiatives to include managing up with each patient.
6. Monitor supply usage and ensure units are stocked appropriately.
7. Monitor/remove/replace monthly outdates to ensure regulatory compliance.
8. Assist Emergency Department Director with department PI projects and implementation of new processes.
9. Maintains and validates Emergency Department central log per federal EMTALA requirements.
Promotes/Provides staff development and education:
1. Assists/provide educational in-services for staff development/competencies
2. Lead/participate in Unit Based Councils for unit.
3. Assist with monitoring of staff licensure and certifications.
4. Assist with hiring/corrective action processes and will provide assistance with annual performance reviews
5. Serve as preceptor for new nurses hired on unit.
Maintains a safe and comfortable environment:
1. Removes malfunctioning equipment from unit immediately upon discovering problem.
2. Complete requisition for repair or malfunctioning equipment by the end of shift.
3. Cleans and stocks supplies within the department, as needed.
4. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of location, care and operation of all departmental equipment.
5. Ensures alarms on any assigned area are audible to alert staff.
6. Acts rapidly, effectively and manages self and others during emergency situations.
7. Ensures code blue carts are checked each shift and upon using the cart, ensuring it has an intact tag attached.
8. Assists with monthly crash cart checks to ensure out dates are identified/removed/replaced.
Develops and promotes hospital/unit initiatives and professional relations:

9. Provides assistance with record/patient care reviews/audits.
Registered Nurse with current nursing license in the state of Missouri. Prefer BSN and CEN or willingness to acquire both. BLS/ACLS/PALS, TNCC, & NIHSS stroke certification required. Annual trauma CEUs required.
