Primary Purpose:  

Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify ELAR curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels. Ability to plan and implement effective co-teaching in ELAR with general education teachers. Work in team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned. 


Qualifications: 
Education/Certification: 

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited university
  • Valid TExES ELAR 7-12 teaching certificate 
  • Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned
  • ESL Certification/Endorsement required
  • TExES EC-12 Special Education teaching certification (may obtain upon hiring)  


Special Knowledge/Skills: 

  • Knowledge of core academic subject assigned
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong understanding of differentiation and student learning styles 

Experience: 

  • One year student teaching or approved internship

Instructional Strategies:

  1. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned. 
  2. Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in individual student differences.
  3. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  4. Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  5. Work cooperatively with teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  6. Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis and serve as a Special Education case manager for a group of students to ensure progress on IEP goals.  
  7. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.

Student Growth and Development: 

  1. Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  2. Be a positive role model for students; support the mission of the school district.
  3. Provide or supervise the personal care of students as needed.

Classroom Management and Organization: 

  1. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  2. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  4. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.


Communication:

  1. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members. 


Professional Growth and Development: 

  1. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  2. Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom 
  3. teachers.
  4. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.


Other: 

  1. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  2. Must be present regularly in person.
  3. May be responsible for Medicaid billing for students with personal care needs 


Supervisory Responsibilities:  

  1. Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s) (if applicable).

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: 

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard classroom equipment including personal computer and peripherals. [P.E. teachers: automated external defibrillator (AED)]

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting 

Motion: Frequent walking 

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move text books and classroom equipment 

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise 

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
