Summary
The CNC Programmer writes and edits programs as needed for CNC machining.
Essential Functions
CNC Programmer essential duties include, but are not limited to:
- Use and run the computer software necessary for programming CNC machines.
- Occasionally set-up and run CNC equipment.
- Create and maintain CNC programs.
- Make any necessary changes to programs.
- Read blueprints and 3-D computer models.
- Participate in total quality management projects to achieve continuous improvement.
- Participate in LEAN manufacturing and SPC activities as required.
Marginal Functions
CNC Programmer will also be proficient in the following tasks:
- Perform any other duties not mentioned above when instructed to do so by a supervisor.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
Required Safety Equipment
- Steel toe work boots
- Safety glasses – as needed
- Ear plugs – as needed
- Work gloves – as needed
- Hard hat - required for forklift operation
Environmental Conditions
- Work environment is primarily an indoor office at an industrial manufacturing plant.
- Temperature in work area can exceed 85 F throughout the work year.
- Sharp metal shavings and burr chips are unavoidable in work area. Adequate protective gear is required to avoid injury.
- Chemical-containing lubricants and coolants are used with CNC machines.
- Moderate-to-high noise from machinery is present in work area.
Physical Demands
- Some mild twisting and/or bending may be required.
- Repetitive hand and wrist movements.
Sensory/Cognitive Demands
CNC Programmer must be able to:
- Maintain a high-level of focus on the assigned tasks throughout a scheduled shift.
- Skillfully navigate and run programming software.
- Demonstrate extensive knowledge of CNC software and machining.
- Read and comprehend blueprints, models and travelers.
- Use basic shop math.
- Edit programs at CNC machines.
- Communicate with supervisor, maintenance personnel and co-workers.
- Recognize any mechanical dysfunctions and notify a supervisor.
- Work with little or no supervision throughout shift.
Education/Work Experience Requirements
- Minimum 5 years experience with CNC programming or equivalent vocational training.
- Must be able to read blueprints.
