Definition

Under general supervision of the Director of Special Services, performs work of considerable difficulty, developing, coordinating, and delivering the district's English Language Development (ELD) programs.

Summary

Coordinate the district program for Bilingual and English Language Learners (ELs). Collaborate with district staff and outside personnel to provide educational opportunities for Bilingual, ELLs, and migrant students. This includes ensuring that regulations are met and that EL students are supported appropriately in their academic and language development. This position involves approximately 117 hours (in addition to the teacher contract) as the ELD Coordinator.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains, evaluates, and improves the district ELD plan and program
  • Leads the ELD team, including facilitating monthly team meetings and coordinating the ELD program strategic planning process
  • Implements the State and Governing Board approved SEI model(s) for EL students
  • Oversees the adoption and implementation of ELD curriculum
  • Supports ELD Targeted and Integrated Teachers, and provides appropriate professional development
  • Assists school administrators, teachers, and other staff in implementing the approved SEI model(s)
  • Coordinates ELD data collection and reporting at classroom, school, and district levels
  • Maintains records of all EL students and their status using the appropriate district electronic programs
  • Ensures that all federal and state reporting requirements are met, including Title III
  • Coordinates testing of EL students
  • Coordinates ELD testing accommodations for all annual and quarterly assessments
  • Maintains and improves the ELD Department section of the district website
  • Communicates with the district through a quarterly newsletter
  • Communicates with the parents of EL students
  • Assists with translation and interpretation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and CFSD guidelines regarding ELD programs.
  • Knowledge of ELD instructional and assessment methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of proper English grammar, usage, and spelling.
  • Skills in developing and delivering ELD curriculum.
  • Skill in coordinating an ELD program and maintaining mandated records.
  • Skill in training ELD educational assistants.
  • Skill in communicating effectively, orally, and in writing.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, administrators, students, and parents.

Qualifications & Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate and at least 3 years of classroom teaching experience required
  • Structured English Immersion (SEI), English as a Second Language (ESL), or Bilingual Education endorsement required
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred
  • Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Thorough knowledge of ELL and Title III laws and regulations
  • Requires the ability to work with teachers, parents, coaches, sponsors, and students in a variety of situations and work effectively in a team-oriented school.
  • Must possess the ability to identify professional development strategies that will positively impact teachers' professional growth and student achievement.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office or the Google Workspace
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, and respectfully with staff, parents, and students from diverse backgrounds.

Computer Proficiency: Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, and specialized ELL software.

Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion is often required to perform functions of the position. Work Environment

Works indoors - classroom environment. Outdoors - playground, exposure to all weather conditions and temperatures. Exposure to noise, dust, and fumes. Extensive contact with students, parents, and teachers.
