Definition
Reports to the Athletic Director who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principal.
Essential Functions
Must advise, coordinate and support the sport staff with the athletic director and principal, to instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the students shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence.
General Tasks
The position includes other aspects such as extended time, risk injury factors and due process predicaments. It is the express intent of the job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach will exercise the common sense and good judgment of a prudent and reasonable person.
Duties And Responsibilities
Must have a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the high school administration, and be responsible for implementation by the entire staff of the sports program. Must have knowledge of the existing system, state and region regulations; implementing same consistently, and interpreting them for staff and athletes. Must understand the proper administrative line of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels. Maintains discipline, manages grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation. Develops, organizes, and supervises practices and competitions to ensure ethical participation, the safety of all who are present, as well as the adherence to all AIA and NFHS rules of the sport. Performs other duties which may be assigned by the athletic director/principal. Assists the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation and requirements for tournament and special sports events. Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practice. Advises the athletic director of recommendations pertaining to changes in policy.
Qualifications
Valid Arizona Teacher Certification or Substitute Certificate required. Employment as a teacher at the Catalina Foothills School District preferred. Must have ability to organize and supervise a total sports program. Should possess substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time, continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. Must be CPR certified. Must have a current, valid IVP Level One fingerprint clearance card without restrictions at the time of hire. Must be able and willing to drive a district vehicle to transport students to matches and serve as the team's supervising adult. Coach is required to have an Arizona driver's license with a clean driving record.
