The Role:
Deck Hand positions are available for both seasonal / temporary and part time. As a deckhand you are responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of the interior and exterior of the Ocean Expeditions Vessels. The deckhand's responsibility includes delivering an accurate narrative tour script to guests aboard the company’s vessels.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the deckhand include:
- Boarding all guests safely and taking tickets when necessary
- Guest relations - providing patrons an exceptional ocean experience
- Skiff / equipment operations and maintenance as needed
- Safety Demonstrations such as donning a lifejacket
- Fueling vessels
- Stocking fish food on board certain vessels
- Line and rope handling, tying up
- Clean up after tours and make vessel ready for next departure
- Handles lines to moor vessel, tie up vessels, rig towing lines
- Cross sell other company tours and activities
- Deliver from memory an informative narrative to our guests about the island marine life, history and ecology as set forth in the approved tour script guidelines
- Drive skiffs to and from dingy dock and vessel moorings
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be minimum of 18 years of age
- Excellent customer service skills
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Ability to multi-task in a changing environment
- Ability to work a flexible schedule to include: nights, weekends and holidays as needed
- Able to speak to groups of guest up to 100 at a time
- Flexibility to perform any other ocean expeditions position as necessary
Education and/or Experience:
- High School or GED Diploma
- Prefer prior experience in a boating environment
- Prior experience handling ropes and lines is a plus
Language Skills:
Ability to effectively respond to questions from managers, clients, customers and the general public.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time on a moving vessel
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, stretch, push and pull on a regular basis.
- Must have full range of overhead motions and full hand dexterity.
- Requires visual acuity and the ability to hear clearly to communicate with managers, coworkers and guests
