Supervision Received and Exercised
Under general supervision, performs a variety of tours & excursion activities for Catalina Island visitors. Performs pre-trip vehicle inspection and safety checks.
Drives the island's interior and city roads and ensures each guest has an enjoyable and memorable experience; and performs related work as required.
This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is an advanced level classification in the Motor Tours & Activities series responsible for performing a variety of driving and spiel / narrative functions as well as performing a variety of routine daily vehicle inspections (DVIR), interacting with guests and exemplary customer service skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of various positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
The incumbent is responsible for :
Drive tours through the town of Avalon and out into the interior of the Island
Always ensure exemplary customer service skills
Deliver commentary on the island history, wildlife, flora & fauna
Properly document pre-trip inspections & passenger counts
Properly document any accidents or incidents
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Must have a valid commercial Driver’s License with a clean record
Must have passenger endorsement
Must be able to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
Must have exemplary customer service skills
Must be able to deliver a commentary whilst driving passengers
Education and Experience :
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
Previous tour driver experience & airbrake endorsement preferred
High School / GED diploma
Knowledge of :
- Principles and practices of record-keeping.
- Principles and practices for providing an elevated level of customer service.
- Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications.
Ability to :
- Learn new skills and tasks with a willing eagerness
- Work comfortably at heights.
- Fully complete required site-specific safety training and pass written and practical skills tests.
- Obtain valid CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
- Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Independently keep touring guidelines, routes and timelines.
- Demonstrate strong customer service skills and establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships.
- Complete DVIR records and files as required by USDOT
- Use English effectively to communicate in person, and in writing.
- Pass drug screening requirements.
- Obtain the Naturalist certification through the Catalina Island Conservancy.
Licenses and Certifications :
At time of appointment, a valid commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement and satisfactory driving record that is maintained throughout employment.
Physical Demands
Visual acuity and the ability to hear in order to clearly communicate to managers, coworkers, guests and vendors
Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
Must be able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time
Must have finger to hand dexterity, ability to grip controls, tickets
Must be able to bend, kneel and crouch
Must be able to work in an inside and outside environment with varying temperatures ranging from 40 90 degrees Fahrenheit
Must pass a Background and Drug Screening
Must be able to drive at night
Environmental Elements
Operators of tour buses and offroad tour vehicles work primarily in an outdoor environment with moderate noise levels. May work in cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions.
Tour vehicle operators will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.
Working Conditions
Drivers may be assigned an on-call and irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.
