What are the responsibilities and job description for the Kennel Technician position at Catawba County Government?

Do you have strong self-motivation, communication, and multi-tasking skills? Catawba County Emergency Services is recruiting for full-time Kennel Technicians to join our Animal Services team.
As a Kennel Technician, you will ensure all animals within the Animal Shelter receive proper care, cleaning, and medical attention and are inventoried appropriately. You will also assist with various clinics and outreach events and provide transportation of animals.
The schedule is 40-hours a week, Sunday- Thursday 8AM-5PM with some holiday work required to care for needs of animals.
- Intake of animals, including computer input, vaccinating, and temperament evaluation
- Care for animals, including cleaning/sanitizing of kennels and animals, feeding, and watering
- Evaluating and arranging appropriate medical care
- Socializing animals
- Inventory and tracking of animals
- Assisting the public with questions via phone and in-person
- Out taking and returning animals to owners
- Keeping up to date with lost and found reports
- Assisting with various clinics (ex: spay/neuter, etc.), outreach events (foster, adoption, etc.), or veterinarian appointments; transporting animals as needed
- Euthanizing animals, as needed, that are sick/injured or those that do not meet the criteria for adoption/rescue
- High School diploma or GED equivalent with some customer service experience and the demonstrated ability to perform the essential tasks of the position
- Previous experience working with and interacting with animals is necessary. (This experience must be included in the application to be considered.)
Additional Requirements:
- NC Certified Euthanasia Technician or ability/willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe
- Certified Rabies Vaccinator or ability/willingness to obtain within a specified timeframe
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
- Strongly self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as with a team
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
- Highly compassionate
- Sound knowledge of animal behavior and care and the ability to interact positively and safely with animals of all kinds
- High level of professionalism with excellent customer service; capable of dealing tactfully with the public
- Good computer skills; ability to input and use animal tracking system
- This position is considered Heavy Work, lifting to 50 pounds daily and 100 pounds occasionally with an assistant. Much physical labor is involved in this position, including lifting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping to clean kennels and care for animals.
