JOB TITLE: LIFE SAFETY TECHNICIAN
FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
SALARY RANGE: $2,883.00 TO $3,924.00
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Responsible for working with the life safety trade to ensure a safe and code compliant learning environment for the school system. Performs fire and electrical inspections in conjunction with local authorities. Maintains detailed records of inspections and repairs. Responds to life safety system malfunctions, or other emergencies as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Regularly inspects fire alarms, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting and other life safety equipment for proper functionality and compliance with codes.
Repairs, remodels, installs, services and replaces life safety equipment and other related items as directed by the Director of Maintenance.
Possess physical ability to perform related tasks including lifting, climbing as needed to perform the job.
Maintains tools, equipment and supplies for proper job performance.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Works with other related maintenance trades.
Performs other related maintenance duties as directed by the Director of Maintenance.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school and three years minimum experience in fire alarm and life safety trade with most experience in institutional or commercial systems, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate power tools and mechanical equipment. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently. Must be able to perform all related tasks including lifting and climbing as needed to perform the job functions. Physical demand requirements are for medium to heavy work.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using a prescribed format.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add, subtract, divide and multiply.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using tools.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as maintenance equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear.
Other: A valid NC driver’s License Required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Minimum of three years experience in Life Safety and/or Fire Prevention.
Knowledge of current electrical and fire codes.
Knowledge of current building codes.
Wide knowledge of the techniques, methods and tools of the life safety trade.
Skill in the performance of duties related to the life safety trade.
Ability to use tools associated with the life safety trade.
Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
Ability to work without direct supervision.
