JOB DESCRIPTION: TheEnvironmental Monitoring and Surveillance Technician II will provide technical and administrative support to the Environmental Services division in the implementation of environmental monitoring programs for the Catawba Indian Nation. This will include sample collection, processing, and data management in the areas of ambient air quality (equipment operation), indoor air quality, surface and drinking water quality, soil quality, and other media regarding environmental health as needed, Staff must have a desire for protecting tribal lands and resources, be self-motivated and have intermediate technical training in the environmental field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Perform ambient air quality monitoring (regulatory and non-regulatory) capabilities and participate in regional air quality regulatory program management.
· Assist with the development of Federal Certification for Bacteriological testing (Total Coliform and E. coli. (Method 9223) for drinking water.
· Perform laboratory testing of surface and drinking water samples in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and CIN Water Lab SOPs and QAP
· Management of lab inventory and records for compliance with federal and state certifications.
· Adhere to lab safety and training compliance requirements.
· Perform field and laboratory equipment calibrations, maintenance, and record keeping.
· Prepare technical reports as requested.
· Operate and maintain environmental testing equipment.
· Development and revision of SOPs, and policies for environmental monitoring and surveillance programs
· Prepare technical reports and data interpretation for environmental inspections and testing services provided within the Catawba Indian Nation.
· Collect samples of various environmental media as needed for assessments including soil, air, and water.
· Review and input data collected through air and water quality monitoring to respective online databases.
· Complete other environmental services duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
· Minimum associate's degree in environmental science or related field and 2 years' work experience in environmental field
· A bachelor's degree in environmental science or related field can replace the work experience requirement
· Possess a valid SC driver’s license and be insurable under the Tribe’s insurance policy.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
· Prior working knowledge and experience with federal and state grant programs and reporting requirements.
· Possess a working knowledge and understanding of environmental issues.
· Ability and willingness to travel for attending training, meetings, and workshops
· Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills to work with federal, state, local, and tribal officials and the general public in a professional manner.
· Must be willing to receive training and become certified in the areas of environmental management as directed by staff.
· Independent and self-motivated to complete required tasks in a timely manner with a minimum of supervision to achieve measurable results and outcomes.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; bend so as to open/use lower drawers or cabinetry; to talk, hear, and see. The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally life and/or move up to 50 pounds.
