What are the responsibilities and job description for the ABE Academy Instructor, Part-Time position at Catawba Valley Community College?
Part-time instructor to teach in the Adult Basic Education Academy program for adult students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the College and Career Readiness department at CVCC. Teaching hours are 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM daily Monday through Thursdays each week. This position reports to the ABE Coordinator.
This position is an in-person teaching position that can be moved online possibly if the college requires.
Examples of Duties
Provide effective instruction to students by preparing for each learning experience, providing supplemental materials to enhance lessons.
Ensure teaching and working environment by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness and functionality.
Maintain accurate attendance records
Teach and develop literacy-based vocationally focused lesson plans which are engaging and beneficial to adult students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Learn all policies and procedures of the department and abide by them.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Education, psychology, behavioral health, or related field.
Experience in an educational setting is preferred. Experience working with the IDD population is highly desirable but not required.
Experience with vocational training and/or workforce development preparation considered a plus.

ABE instructors must demonstrate a passion for teaching, an understanding of the barriers students with unique abilities face, and a professional and kind demeanor towards these students. Flexibility with job duties and great attention to detail is a must.
Must be able to work as part of a team and must value collaboration; possess good teaching and organizational skills; able to communicate effectively both in verbal and written expression; and possess an educational philosophy that is compatible with the mission of the community college.
