What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time Director of Religious Education (DRE) position at Cathedral of Saint Paul?
We seek an organized, detail-oriented Director of Religious Education to support the educational initiatives of the Cathedral parish. The successful candidate will be able to work on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings during the school year to support the Parish School of Religion (PSR) and Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) programs, with schedule flexibility at other times for other tasks. Possibility of extended time off during summer, once annual planning and early summer programs are complete.
The person in this position must be a practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church, able to work in a vibrantly Catholic environment and provide a Christian, compassionate, and professional personality; he or she must be a team player who will share and participate in the vision and goals of the Pastor of the Cathedral.
This hourly position will ordinarily require 10-20 hours' work, with seasonal fluctuations. Apart from the fixed Wednesday and Sunday times mentioned, the work schedule is flexible within normal office hours.
Responsibilities:
- Plan annual Parish School of Religion schedule.
- Plan annual Order of Christian Initiation of Adults schedule.
- Assist Pastor in recruitment of catechists.
- Train catechists.
- Maintain inventory of textbooks and classroom supplies.
- Regularly check classrooms and tidy as needed.
- Prepare classrooms after summer cleaning for re-use starting after Labor Day.
- Order catechetical materials for OCIA and maintain inventory.
- Maintain Youth Protection records and ensure compliance among all participants in Cathedral programs, especially volunteers and leaders.
- Assist catechists in finding substitutes as needed.
- Assist Pastor in scheduling Adult Ed programming, including contacting possible speakers and making arrangements.
- Communicate with parents and volunteers.
- Assist with annual events like the post-Easter Vigil reception, First Communion (preparation, Mass, and reception), Confirmation (including reception).
- Assist with Easter Egg Hunt (preparation and execution).
- Plan and execute the annual Catholic Kids' Week program, in communication and collaboration with parents and other stakeholders, including recruitment of volunteers.
- Possibility of occasionally having to teach an OCIA class; assist Pastor in finding other teachers for various classes.
- Record in the apposite Sacramental Registers the sacraments received through the PSR and OCIA processes; assist with the generation of sacramental certificates.
- Other duties as indicated by the Pastor.
