The Clinics provide psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological therapy, as well as individual, group, family therapy, crisis intervention, medication management, case management and collateral sessions. STATEMENT OF THE JOB

The Agency has embraced the concept of a fully integrated system of care for all consumers of service. This requires that staff assess the client's needs holistically and see it as their responsibility to connect the client with services needed both internal and external to the Agency, regardless of the door through which the consumer enters the system.

Under the direction of a designated Clinical Director, the Peer Counselor (Substance Use Disorder) is responsible for direct service to clients in the Agency's outpatient mental health programs. All services are to be delivered in a professional and ethical manner, consistent with best practice tenets. The Peer Counselor (Substance Use Disorder)will use their life experience to assist individuals engaging in substance misuse with engagement into the program; provide relevant education and support in order to promote and enhance dignity, self-respect and self-reliance in the community; provide mentorship and service as a role model for all members of the program. The Peer Counselor (Substance Use Disorder) will maintain mandated levels of service, participate in Agency meetings as required, and fully comply with Agency policies and procedures.

  • Serves as a recovery agent by providing and advocating for any effective recovery-based services that will aid the veteran in daily living.
  • Works with individuals engaging in substance misuse to articulate personal goals for recovery using one to-one and group sessions.
  • Works with individuals engaging in substance misuse to develop and implement a personal recovery plan (e.g., Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP)). This peer centered recovery plan is instrumental for individuals to "buy into" the process of their recovery. Central to such plans are the overall health and well-being of each individual, not just their mental health.
  • Observes behaviors that might indicate difficulty adapting or responding to treatment (e.g., missed assessment appointments, failure to attend or maintain abstinence, risk to self or others, disruptive behavior), completes appropriate documentation, and reports concerns to the treatment or recovery team in a timely manner.
  • Conduct Outreach in the community and Participate in Outreach events within the community
  • Works with individuals engaging in substance misuse in exploring options for obtaining decent and affordable housing of his / her choice in the most integrated, independent, and least restrictive environment, by making referrals to appropriate housing programs.
  • Participates in conducting relevant assessments, and contacts clients not responding to outreach. In addition, where appropriate will assist clients with securing resources and other supports necessary for maintaining the highest degree of independence and self-reliance in the community.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Provisional New York State Peer Specialist Certification
  • Current or former client of a mental health program.
  • History of substance use and at least one year of sobriety.
  • Knowledge of computer programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook).
  • Good communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work with people with behavioral disabilities.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Frequently lifts and / or moves up to 10 pounds.
  • Able to meet with residents and / or staff throughout facilities.
  • Frequent sitting to write reports and when meeting with clients.
  • Bilingual Spanish / English; Russian / English; Creole / English; Chinese / English; Korean / English speaking preferred.
  • Frequent walking, standing, & sitting.
  • Should be able to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, & office equipment.
  • Ability to read printed & handwritten materials.
  • Ability to travel extensively in the community and use public transportation throughout the five boroughs.
