Position Summary:

Holy Family Catholic Church in Hillsborough, NC is seeking a Director of Religious Education to provide leadership, in collaboration with the Pastor, in the design and implementation of programs for adults, youth, and children to assist in building a solid foundation for adult spirituality, Christian living, and ministry. The Director of Religious Education supports parents and families in their role as primary educators in the faith.

Holy Family Catholic Church is a thriving parish in Hillsborough, NC, a charming historic small town about 20 minutes from both Durham and Chapel Hill. Our bilingual and multicultural parish of just over 1,000 families (we have more parishioners under 10 years old than over 60!) continues to grow rapidly, especially among our Spanish-speaking population.

In years past, faith formation at Holy Family has been distributed among two or three parish staff members. At this time, we are seeking a Director of Religious Education to implement a unified educational and relational formation program for approximately 200-250 1st- through 12th-graders.

Key responsibilities:

  • Implementing weekly faith formation sessions during the academic year for all grade levels
  • Leading faith formation registration drives and maintaining registrant files throughout the year, including seasonal retreats
  • Ordering and distributing curriculum and classroom materials
  • Recruiting, communicating with, and supporting volunteer catechists
  • Communicating with parents/guardians of students throughout the year
  • Designing and implementing summer faith formation programs (e.g., Vacation Bible School) at the elementary level
  • Designing and implementing relational ministry programs at the middle- and high-school levels
  • Scheduling and implementing community service projects, both recurring and individual, to lead students into a deeper life of faith
  • Collaborating with the Pastor and other parish staff to integrate the faith formation program into all facets of our parish life

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Arts degree in theology, evangelization, communications, or related field.
  • At least three years of classroom experience in Catholic elementary/teen faith formation programming.
  • Practicing Roman Catholic, faithful to the Magisterium, who maintains a vibrant personal spiritual life.
  • Strong oral and public communication skills toward all age levels.
  • Able to give testimony about God’s presence in their life at various age-appropriate levels.
  • Ability to coordinate collaboratively with parish staff and adult volunteers.
  • Ability and desire to relate to teenagers in 1-on-1 or small-group mentoring contexts.
  • Experience working with children/teens with special needs & learning accommodations.
  • Familiarity with Facebook/Instagram, YouTube, and X content creation.
  • Fluency in either English or Spanish, functional proficiency in the other language.
  • Employment is contingent upon satisfactorily passing criminal background and reference checks.
  • Must complete diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certificate of catechist formation/training either in hand or to be completed before September 2025 (Holy Family parish will assist with this)
  • Knowledge of common models of Catholic elementary/teen faith formation, including VBS/summer programs

Supervises: Volunteer catechists and mentors
