Job Summary

The Head Varsity Volleyball Coach fulfills the mission of St. Joseph Catholic School by developing, collaborating, and administering the program in a way that adequately prepares our student-athletes for the highest level of interscholastic competition, and beyond. The Head Coach plans and runs practices, collaborates with all assisting personnel, communicates effectively with parents and staff, and fosters relationships beyond just the Varsity team, such as with the Junior High, who are the next generation of SJCS athletes. The regular season runs from August through November. The off-season from November through May. Spring volleyball in May, and summer camps / sport-specific instruction (SSIs) throughout June and July. This is a stipend position. Open teaching fields may be linked for the right candidates. Stipend-only positions are not benefits-eligible. We are a TAPPS member school.

Coaches fulfill the mission of our Catholic school by developing, initiating, and administering the program in a particular sport which adequately prepares student-athletes for interscholastic competition. Coaches are recommended to the Head of School by the Athletic Director, hired by the Head of School, and evaluated in consultation with the Athletic Director.

Ministerial Character

Catholic schools in the Diocese of Austin are canonically obedient to the Bishop and assist him in fulfilling his ministry and canonical obligations. Pastors, Presidents, and Principals serve as leaders of the schools to make Christ's mission present and enduring in the schools. In order to fulfill Christ's mission, the school leaders employ suitable, chosen collaborators, sharing with them Christ's mission and entrusting to them various responsibilities.

All positions of employment at St Joseph Catholic School help extend the ministry of School Leadership in essential ways as outlined in the job description . Coaches are closely connected to, and assist School leaders in the performance of their ministry and, therefore, are engaging in a ministry of the Church.

Essential Duties

  • Supports and upholds the philosophy and the mission of the Catholic Church
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Supports and adheres to the Code of Conduct, and policies and procedures, of St. Joseph Catholic School and the Diocese of Austin
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters
  • Models professional conduct and sensible sportsmanship, while instilling these characteristics within team members
  • Conducts practice sessions and games according to local diocesan policy and league regulations
  • Schedules practices and games in consultation with the Athletic Director
  • Verifies student eligibility to practice and participate by proper completion of TAPPS Management System (TMS) Profiles
  • Monitors the physical fitness and readiness of participants, and reports injuries to parents and school officials in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Continually monitors and supervises all teams members at home and on the road
  • Teaches essential safety skills and strategies to student-athletes
  • Collaborates with Athletic Trainer and Strength & Conditioning Coach to facilitate rehab of injured athletes and return-to-play protocol
  • Follows school transportation rules and procedures
  • Attends all required staff events, and fosters relationships outside of the court or field
  • Emphasize the importance of prayer before and after all practices, games, & contests
  • Models professional dress for all games & contests
  • Pursues continuing education and self-improvement as a coach

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Able to instruct athletes about proper strategy, skills and rules of the sport
  • Able to motivate student-athletes to perform optimally as individuals and as members of a team
  • Able to communicate positively and objectively in both written and verbal form
  • Works to develop the abilities growth and performance of each athlete
  • Uses approved, corrective, and positive discipline procedures in dealing with inappropriate student conduct
  • Collaborates with school personnel to enhance the work environment and support academic programming
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Skill in critical thinking and planning
  • Conferences with parents upon request and responds to messages in a timely manner
  • Demonstrates a ca-do attitude which strengthens the team around them and builds others up

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma or GED (preferably a Bachelor’s degree)
  • Current CPR / First Aid certification
  • Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) compliant
  • 5 years coaching experience (preferably at the high school level or above)
