Job Description
The Position Purpose is to assist students and teaching staff in creating an enriching library/media center environment with a wide range of reading and other educational materials. The successful candidate will maintain the library collection at the school site, develop programs for students utilizing library resources, and instruct students on the proper use of the library resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and supervise the Library/Media Center.
- Evaluate, select, and requisition books, aids, and supplies, maintaining inventory records.
- Coordinate with administrators and teaching staff to select instructional materials, keeping students and teachers informed about new acquisitions.
- Provide research assistance to students and serve as a ready resource.
- Maintain a comprehensive cataloguing system for media center materials and assist students and teachers in using the system.
- Coordinate lending of library materials to students and teachers.
- Continuously acquire professional knowledge and learn about current developments in education through seminars, workshops, or meetings.
- Organize record-keeping systems and provide student information to colleges and employers as required by district procedures and laws.
- Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Enforce student conduct standards and establish behavior expectations for a functional learning atmosphere.
- Participate in lessons with classroom teachers and develop media center displays.
Equipment Used
The position requires the use of standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy machines, fax machines, and telephones.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of pre/post high school program eligibility requirements.
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation for performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Certification/License
- New York State Certification as a Librarian or Library/Media Specialist.
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
- Masters Degree preferred.
