Position Purpose:
Performs basic law enforcement duties in the protection and safeguarding of life and property, the prevention of crime and apprehension of criminals and the preservation of peace in compliance with federal, state and local law, and performs related work as required.
Supervision Scope:
This is a non-supervisory position
Supervision Received:
Works under the direction of the Police Sergeant within policies established by City of Cave Springs and in accordance with applicable Arkansas Laws and City Ordinances.
Supervision Given:
This is a non-supervisory position.
Job Environment:
Work is primarily performed outdoors under typical conditions. Will have some exposure to adverse weather conditions. Given the nature of police work, there may be an element of risk.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Work activities are varied and require independent action and judgement in addressing issues/problems, some of which are unusual in nature. Issues often require further research and investigation.
Errors could result in legal repercussions, inefficiencies, time loss, and loss of goodwill.
Contacts ae with employees within and outside the department, as well as the public.
Contacts with the public requires courtesy, tact and diplomacy as well as the ability to persuade and influence someone’s actions.
Requires maintaining confidential department material, as well as maintaining the privacy of individuals who lodge complaints, or are being investigated, as allowed by Arkansas Law.
Examples of Work:
Provides courteous and expeditious police service to the general public. Enforces the laws of the State of Arkansas and ordinances of the City of Cave Springs.
Patrols an assigned area within established guidelines and responded to calls for police service.
Conducts preliminary investigations of disturbances, burglaries, thefts, robberies, motor vehicle accidents, deaths or other matters involving possible violation of the law.
Conducts crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
Prepares reports on arrest, traffic accidents, offenses, damage to property and investigations conducted. Directs traffic or provides traffic control when needed and provides escort or support services for parades or public meetings, funeral processions, or other special events.
Issues warnings or citations for traffic and other misdemeanor violations.
Administers first aid to injures persons and request medical attention as required.
Appears in court to present evidence and give testimony. Serves orders of the court.
Demonstrates the use of all types of issued firearms in accordance with department policy.
Performs any other duties as needed or assigned.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications Education, Training and Experience:
Must be twenty-five years of age and possess and valid driver’s license. Must be free of any felony convictions and free of any convictions for crimes of domestic violence. Must not have any criminal charges pending. Must have attended the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy. Preferred three years of Law Enforcement Experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skills:
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances as it pertains to public safety and law enforcement.
Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of modern law enforcement.
Knowledge of the methods, practices, and technical equipment used in crime and accident investigation.
Knowledge of demographics and geography of the community.
Ability to manage crisis situations.
Ability to exercise discretion.
Ability to analyze data and make decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with colleagues, city officials, other city departments and the public.
Ability to communicate effectively with public agencies and the media.
Ability to make appropriate managerial decisions and maintain accurate records.
Ability to persuade and influence others.
Ability to learn and adapt to changing technologies and practices.
Strong interpersonal, oral, written, and organizational skills.
Skill in directing and managing complex law enforcement programs.
Skill in the use of firearms.
Physical Requirements:
Work requires frequent light to moderate physical effort while performing office work. Is required to stand, sit, walk, speak, and listen for extended periods. The position is frequently required to handle, or feel objects, tools, and equipment. Occasionally requires walking, bending/stooping, reaching with hands and arms and carrying/lifting (normally no more than 25 pounds). Extreme physical exertion may be required including physical combat.
The position requires visual perception and discrimination in each eye correctable to 20/20, color and depth perception and discrimination without impairment. The position requires sound and odor perception and discrimination.
