PURPOSE OF POSITION: Plans, implements, directs and evaluates comprehensive therapeutic recreation program which encourages residents to function at the highest level of independence possible. Assesses the functional needs of residents and provides therapeutic techniques and/or equipment necessary for maximum independence of residents.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensures that residents are accurately assessed to determine interests, physical ability, mental alertness and level of socialization. Ensures that realistic goals with residents, with indicated time frames as required by State and Federal regulations. Supports and facilitates plan of care for residents.
Assures that effective therapeutic recreation programs are established that meet the individual needs, wants and desires of each resident.
Develops, ensures and directs resident care documentation including history, MDS, progress notes, annual and quarterly comprehensive assessments, discharge summaries and plan of care updates to comply with State and Federal regulations. Organizes and maintains therapeutic recreation documentation including resident attendance records.
Plans and schedules a variety of social, educational, recreational and religious group and 1:1 activities. Collaborates with other disciplines and establishes a monthly schedule of activities.
Provides in-service training and orientation for direct care staff on the emotional/social needs of the aged as requested.
Attends care conferences to coordinate therapeutic recreation program with other aspects of resident care.
Ensures sufficient supplies and equipment for resident activities are available and in good working order.
Oversees monthly Resident Council meetings and follows up on resident concerns with appropriate individuals and/or departments.
Establishes and maintains departmental policies, procedures and regulations to conform to organizational policies and procedures.
Prepares and submits departmental budget incorporating capital needs and staffing requirements. Establishes and adheres to standards for cost effectiveness to ensure the highest quality of services is provided within established budget.
Participates in the hiring process for all new recreation staff. Oversees training of new and current staff. Conducts departmental meetings as needed. Evaluates staff in a timely manner following established performance evaluation system.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Therapeutic Recreation Therapist OR Possession of a Bachelors Degree in recreational therapy or a related field such as recreation and leisure studies with an emphasis or concentration in recreational therapy/therapeutic recreation OR a minimum of 5 years experience and training working in a skilled nursing facility and working with older adults.
