Job Description:

Position Title: School Programs Intern (Higher Education Programs)

Position Type: Part-time 

Division: Learning and Engagement

Department: School Programs

Reports to: Manager, Museum Education

Position Summary:

Interns at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art gain invaluable experience learning alongside museum staff. We are looking for an intern to assist with all facets of the school visit program. The internship will be approximately 20-30 hours per week. These hours will be a combination of mornings and afternoons with the occasional evening and weekend. As an intern, you will work directly with the Manager Museum Education and School Programs Assistant within the Education Department in planning, supporting and executing guided and self-guided tours for 50,000 K-12 school children as well as on and off-site events for Teachers.

This person will also help assist the School Programs Department with some administrative and educational planning duties as needed. You will become familiar with the processes of museum administration, curriculum planning, art education and arts integration strategies while also learning in a creative and engaging environment. The performance will be evaluated on the ability to meet deadlines, follow directions, and contribute workable solutions within the School Programs Department sort paragraph describing the position, who they will be working with/reporting to, any other relevant information}

Duties and Responsibilities:

Areas of Support

  • Work with the Director of Curriculum & Arts Integration, Manager of Museum Education, and School Programs Assistant to coordinate school visit logistics:
    • Greeting School Buses
    • Escorting groups inside the museum
    • Explaining museum guidelines
    • Facilitating lunches
    • Providing directions for after lunch experiences
  • Assist with tour research, design, scheduling, promotion, and execution including Pre and post visit support for Teachers.
  • Interns will learn and prepare educational experiences for tours and art workshops.
  • Assist with promotion and execution of Professional Development and the annual Evening for Educators event.
  • Gain a working knowledge of software and systems used by the museum with an emphasis on the Event Management System (EMS)
  • Assist with processing school reimbursement requests
  • Develop relationships with museum educators & volunteers
  • Interfacing with other departments including culinary, facilities, special events and protection services   
  • Position will shadow School Programs department staff, offer input into projects, will be invited to meetings, and may be asked to assist other departments
  • General administrative duties including accounting, supply ordering and data collection
  • Educational design can include supporting research of art works, prototyping art making activities, writing lesson plans, and contributing to group projects.

Qualifications:

  • Coursing a higher education degree (Bachelors or Graduate Program) with interest in careers associated with Education, museum education, Arts and Culture, Hospitality.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must have a strong interest in event planning/customer services
  • Previous event experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Event database and design application experience a plus
  • A “can do” attitude and desire to learn
  • Ability to follow instructions and also work independently
  • Creative and detail-oriented
  • Sign confidentiality agreement as the ability to understand and maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and discretion is required

Hours: Undergraduate students (bachelor’s Level): Up to 20 hours a week; Graduate Students (master’s Level): Up to 25 hours a week

Weekly schedule to be arranged with direct supervisor

To qualify for bachelor’s or master’s hours, you must be enrolled in an accredited program or have graduated from an accredited program within the last three years. Students will be required to submit a current schedule or official transcript.

Compensation:

Undergraduate Interns: $13.00 an hour

Graduate (Master’s Level) Interns: $14.00 an hour

Physical Demands and Work Environment: 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

  • Physical demands:  In the work environment described below, position requires work at a desk, utilizing a computer and a telephone for prolonged periods of time, good eye/hand coordination, bending and stretching for filing, and physical stamina to lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a height of at least three feet for file and materials storage as appropriate for the demands of the office. Visual acuity to review written materials is required for this job.  

  • Work environment:  Work will be performed in an office environment and museum spaces. The noise level in the museum work environment is usually low to moderate. 

If the intern’s personal equipment is used, the museum accepts no liability for any damage caused to said equipment while being used for museum purposes, nor loss or corruption of electronic files on devices.
