Position Title: Summer Camp Assistant | Summer 2025

Reports to: Manager of Youth and Family Programs

Crystal Bridges is a museum of American art located in Bentonville, Arkansas. We explore the unfolding story of America by actively collecting, exhibiting, interpreting, and preserving outstanding works that illuminate the American heritage and artistic possibilities. Founded by Alice Walton in 2005, the museum opened in 2011 and is a public, non-profit charitable organization with free admission.

Position Summary:

The full-time Summer Camp Assistant is an entry-level position within Public Programs, in the Learning & Engagement Division, with a high degree of public and volunteer contact and support to educators and teaching artists for Summer Camps. This position will focus on setup and teaching assistance for youth camps, including registration, supply management, classroom setup and organization, and teacher assistance. This position begins June 2 and concludes August 1.

This person reports to the Manager of Youth and Family Programs and works in close collaboration with the Public Programs team, contracted artists, museum staff, and volunteers. Summer Camp Assistant training week is June 2 - 6. Summer Camps are delivered Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm June 9 – August 1 so the ability to work at those times is required. No Summer Camps are offered the week of June 30 – July 4, but Summer Camps Assistants will be offered hours this week to reset.

This is a full-time temporary position.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Assists teachers in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, and cooperative classroom and learning environment.
  • Assists in organizing the learning environment; prepares and sets up instructional materials and/or equipment for use in classroom activities; maintains instructional material and equipment.
  • Assists teachers in implementing the course of study through one-to-one and group instruction; accompanies or assists campers to and from transportation and in moving to and from activities on the museum site.
  • Works with campers without disabilities and campers with a range of learning, physical, and emotional disabilities, assisting in the implementation of classroom behavior intervention plans where necessary.
  • Supervises and supports campers with and without disabilities in various situations including during breaks and in the galleries, maintaining control under difficult and emergency situations.
  • Performs kneeling, stooping, standing, and lifting activities in the performance of required daily activities.
  • Maintains confidentiality of camper records and classroom information in accordance with legal requirements and policies.
  • Maintains a variety of records related to the activities and operations of campers in a confidential manner where appropriate.
  • Recognizes and reports safety hazards; learns, understands, and adheres to laws, rules, practices, and procedures related to the museum and those related to the program assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must enjoy working with kids of all ages.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Basic understanding of artmaking practices for youth.
  • Good classroom management skills.
  • Ability to use or willingness to learn Microsoft Office, Google applications, and specialized museum applications including Procare, Asana, and Tessitura.
  • Understanding of child development and behavior (behavior intervention techniques and strategies are a plus).
  • Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, and good judgment when supporting students with and without disabilities.
  • Effectively and tactfully communicate in both verbal and written forms.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records or discussions.
  • Establish and maintain positive and effective work relationships with all involved in summer camps, including museum staff, interns, teachers, and students.
  • Bilingual (Spanish language) is a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED certificate required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, art education, art history, museum studies, studio art, or related field preferred.

  • Paid or volunteer experience working with youth in a formal or informal setting

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid Arkansas driver’s license with clean driving record; willing and able to travel for program development and facilitation.

  • Physical demands: Regularly, while performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to travel independently regionally and in communities served. In the work environment described below, position requires working at a desk and utilizing a computer and a telephone, good eye/hand coordination, bending and stretching, standing and sitting in the ability to move around galleries, the classrooms, and throughout the museum, including travel on the outdoor trails. Visual acuity to review written materials is required for this job.
  • Work Environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, museum galleries, art studios, outdoors on the trails, and in communities served. Some evening and weekend hours are required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the Museum work environment is usually low to moderate.
