The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. The company is seeking a manager for the technical accounting function including accounting consultations, technical research, company policy setting, and assisting the company with implementing new accounting guidance required by U.S. GAAP. In addition to accounting for material transactions and contract review, the technical accounting function is also responsible for the oversight of CEI consolidated accounting policies, and project plans for policy implementations, including communication and socializing such recommendations to all stakeholders. The technical accounting team works closely with the CEI financial reporting team to ensure a consistent and effective communication process occurs on accounting matters and transactions.
This team supports all divisions, which includes Cox Communications, Cox Automotive and Corporate and Growth Operations. This role will involve collaboration and coordination with and require an understanding of each Cox business. Pivotal to your success will be your ability to establish credibility and build trusted relationships with a variety of stakeholders including divisional leadership, colleagues across multiple internal departments, clients, vendors, and other key contacts.
Duties and responsibilities:
Research, analyze, and document accounting considerations for significant transactions, accounting issues, or audit areas of concern. Collaborate and work with the financial accounting team and advise and assist divisions in these areas when necessary.
Compose memos to document approaches to accounting for significant transactions (e.g. modifications of debt agreements, investment classification, litigation accruals or share-based compensation). Ensure external auditors understand the accounting for significant transactions by facilitating technical accounting discussions.
Preparation of CEI Consolidated accounting policies which are applicable to all Cox businesses.
Collaborate with other accounting policy groups within Cox to ensure a consistent and accurate approach to establishing accounting policies, including for newly acquired or consolidated companies.
Evaluate the impact of Accounting Standards Updates (ASUs) including the following:
Assist in interpretation of proposed accounting rule changes being considered by Standard setters, assess the implications to the company and determine a consistent strategy for implementing new and proposed accounting guidance.
Assist in coordination and oversight of detailed implementation plans for all divisions for significant accounting changes.
Oversee and manage the tracking tools/process for all ASUs and the Cox adoption conclusions and status.
Prepare a detailed quarterly checklist for the financial reporting team as a reminder of presentation and disclosure changes as a result of new effective or adopted accounting standards.
On a quarterly basis, draft the accounting standards update disclosure for each set of financial statements.
Assist in reviewing significant contracts to determine the appropriate accounting treatment and prepare related technical accounting memos as necessary to document the appropriate accounting treatment.
Assist in preparation of impairment analyses, including intangibles, fixed assets and investments.
Review draft financial statement disclosures on quarterly and annual basis.
Assist with the coordination of internal training on select U.S. GAAP topics. The company is NASBA certified and provides training to CPAs within Cox.
MINIMUM
Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and 6 years’ accounting experience. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master’s degree and 4 years’ experience; a Ph.D. and 1 year of experience; or 10 years’ experience in a related field
CPA required
Proficiency with and understanding of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”).
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Proven ability to work independently and handle multiple projects and competing demands in a fast-paced environment.
Strong computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and related applications, preferably with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
PREFERRED
Big 4 public accounting experience preferred
Ability to speak and lead meetings with various audiences
Experience drafting accounting policies
Experience with complex accounting issues and strong technical research skills
