Background on America Reads:
The goal of former President Clinton’s America Reads initiative is to mobilize 100,000 college work study students and other volunteers to improve the reading skills of America’s children to ensure that every child can read well and independently by the third grade.
Responsibilities:
Reading Partners work with individual children or small groups, from pre-school through fourth grade. Reading Partners provide opportunities for one-on-one reading practice and enjoyment, which may include: 1) conversation and re-reading favorite books, 2) hands-on activities such as writing, letter play and word games, 3) reading aloud to children, 4) interacting with children as they read new books. Individual time requirements will vary according to site needs.

- Demonstrates reliability
- Respects confidentiality
- Attends mandatory (paid) training session(s)
- Agrees to a criminal background check (conviction of a crime may disqualify applicant)
- Takes responsibility for transportation to and from the site
- CCV degree-seeking student, financial aid qualified*
* Students who are not work-study eligible are welcome as volunteers in the program
Purposes of the CCV Reading Partner Program:
- Model the joy of reading and fun with books
- Provide additional one-on-one reading practice for all children (the program does not solely target children reading below grade level)
- Strengthen the reading partner’s employability skills and provide an opportunity for career exploration
- Provide community service experience and explore the roles and responsibilities of individuals within their communities
Compensation : $16.00 per hour (unless noted otherwise on contract)
