Overview
The Data Engineer will play a crucial role in advancing the CDC Foundation's mission by designing, building, and maintaining data infrastructure for a public health organization. This role is aligned to the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI). WAI is a federally funded CDC Foundation program with the goal of helping the nation’s public health agencies by providing them with the technology and data experts they need to accelerate their information system improvements.
Working within Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD). The Data Engineer will deliver will collaborate across technical and non-technical teams to gather requirements, assure that requirements are correctly understood by developers, assure user training and change management, and facilitate alignment towards the planning and implementation of a public health data systems project. The Data Engineer will collaborate with data content experts, analysts, data scientists, data modelers, warehouse architects, IT staff and other organization staff to design and implement proposed solutions and architectures that meet the needs of the public health agency.
The Data Engineer will be hired by the CDC Foundation and assigned to the Data Governance Team, Application Development Team, Data Warehouse Team. This position is eligible for a fully remote work arrangement for based candidates.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain robust data pipelines and architectures to support data collection, storage, and movement from multiple sources to databases and data warehouses.
- Implement efficient strategies for collecting, storing, and analyzing both structured and unstructured data.
- Manage and work with relational and non-relational databases (, SQL) to ensure efficient data storage and retrieval.
- Apply data modeling techniques to ensure data integrity, enhance performance, and optimize the overall database structure.
- Utilize analytics software to interpret, visualize, and present data insights, contributing to data-driven decision-making across the business.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, translating complex technical solutions for both technical and non-technical stakeholders to support organizational goals.
- Expertise in data pipeline development and data management systems.
- Strong experience with relational and non-relational databases (, SQL).
- Knowledge of data modeling techniques for ensuring data accuracy and performance optimization.
- Proficiency with analytics and data visualization tools such as PowerBI, SAP HANA, SQL Management Studio, and other platforms like Apache Spark, Talend, Tableau.
- Ability to troubleshoot, problem-solve, and communicate effectively with diverse teams.
- Lead or participate in requirements gathering / JAD sessions; working closely with Project or Product Manager(s), developers, subject matter experts, vendors, and users.
- Define and document requirements and use cases and assure these are correctly understood by developers.
- Develop comprehensive test cases at the application and multi-application levels.
- Work with user community, technical teams and vendors to meet implementation timeline.
- Conduct and direct end-user testing responsibilities.
- May perform data quality assurance; troubleshooting application and / or interfaces as problems arise and report issues.
- Facilitate business / functional requirement review, approval, and sign-off sessions.
