Position Title: Entomologist III

Location: Hybrid (Reside in Arizona)

Position End Date: 7/31/25

Salary: $41,800.00 plus benefits


Overview:


The CDC Foundation is seeking a part time Entomologist III who will work 20 hours per week and serve as a member of the ADHS Vector-borne and Zoonotic Disease (VBZD) Team. In this capacity, the position provides expertise on vector surveillance and control, including the identification of medically important arthropods and arachnids in Arizona (such as mosquitoes and ticks) and providing training on vectors and their control to local public health partners and vector control agencies. The position may also work with vector control or entomologist professionals from tribes, other state health departments, the CDC and local universities.



Qualifications:


· Reside in Arizona

· B.S. degree in entomology, biology, public health or related science field

· Laboratory experience in the handling and rearing of arthropods preferred

· Knowledge of mosquito and ticks identification, trapping and control methods

· Proven ability to compile and analyze data

· Strong written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills

· Proficient use of different computer programs (Microsoft office)

· Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated success as a team player

· Ability to interact with individuals from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds

· Highly capable of tracking, summarizing and reporting project activities



Responsibilities:


· Monitoring mosquito surveillance data reported to ArizonaSurv by local vector control agencies and report it to ArboNET

· Presenting the mosquito surveillance data reported to ArizonaSurv at the monthly Arboviral calls and compile monthly reports

· Update ADHS mosquito surveillance protocol and guidance as needed

· Follow up on inquiries or training needs from local vector control agencies related to the use of ArizonaSurv/VectorSurv

· Assist the VBZD team in identifying vector surveillance topics and/or speakers of interest to include in the winter arboviral calls and in the yearly vector conference so that relevant training or updates can be provided to the local vector control agencies

· Completing a survey among local vector control agencies to find out what mosquito resistance testing is conducted and how often

· Working with local jurisdictions to collect information regarding the type of mosquito prevention messages routinely provided to the public

· Conducting mosquito identification training for local vector control agencies

· Assisting in building a tick surveillance program at ADHS, in collaboration with the

· University of Arizona, as part of the ‘Great Arizona Tick Check’, including completing a protocol with steps required to report data to CDC Arbonet Tick Module

· Creating educational material on best practices for mosquito control and prevention for the public as needed

· Attend in person the annual Arizona Game and Fish Expo to provide education on mosquito and tick prevention to the public

· Uses the latest guidance from the research community as well as professional contacts to update various CDPHE guidance documents for vector surveillance and control

· Keep the ADHS mosquito page updated

· Answer calls regarding vector-borne disease and other medical entomological issues on an as needed basis

This role is involved in a dynamic public health program. As such, roles and responsibilities are subject to change as situations evolve. Roles and responsibilities listed above may be expanded upon or updated to match priorities and needs, once written approval is received by both the CDC Foundation and Arizona Department of Health Services, in order to best support the State of Arizona in their public health programming. This position is currently a hybrid position. CDC Foundation retains the right to make adjustments to this as required.
