ABOUT THE POSITION
The main objective of the paid Teen Farm Fellowship is to teach local youth ages 15-18 essential skills in small-scale diversified organic farming through hands-on experiential learning as well as on and off-site training.
Under the direction of the Education Programs Manager, Vegetable Production Manager, and Teen Farm Fellowship Lead, the Fellows will learn a variety of sustainable agriculture, horticulture and marketing skills as well and develop crucial job, team building and leadership experience. The fellowship is involved with production operations at Cedar Circle Farm and Education Center including planting, maintaining and harvesting crops, cleanup, distribution of produce and more. The Fellows will have 2 or 4 hour long courses per week on a variety of sustainable agriculture topics including: business management; farm planning; marketing; soil fertility; weed and pest management; and more. The Fellows will also have the opportunity to visit other local farms and youth agriculture programs to enhance their educational experience and training.
ESSENTIAL CREW FUNCTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS
- Learn the workings of Cedar Circle’s 25 acre fruit, berry, and flower operations and play a key role in harvest efforts.
- From June through August works 30–35 hours per week, with half days on Mondays and Fridays (7:30am - 12:00pm) and full days on Tues / Weds / Thurs (7:30am - 3:00pm).
- Actively engages with the farm, staff, and fellow cohort members as part of a dynamic educational experience at Cedar Circle Farm and Education Center. Attends educational training with excitement and enthusiasm for learning about sustainable agriculture.
- Participates in a Food Citizen Action Project, in which crew members will identify a food system problem and design a solution to address it, and present those findings in an Open House presentation.
- Arrives promptly for work at scheduled time and puts in 100% effort.
- Serves as representative of Cedar Circle Farm and Education Center for those visiting the farm and when off site visiting outside farms, businesses and organizations for service learning.
- Assist with other CCFEC related assignments as necessary.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is primarily outdoors in the field—in all-weather conditions such as hot sun, wind, rain, and cold—as well as in greenhouses and barns. Physical strength and endurance is required, including the ability to lift 40 pounds regularly. Awareness, respect, and care will need to be taken while working around equipment and agricultural machinery (tractors and implements).

Education and Experience
Teen Farm Fellows must be 15-18 years old. No prior work experience is required, however, candidates must demonstrate a willingness to work hard and learn about sustainable agriculture. Persuasive responses to application questions, prior work or volunteer experience, and extra-curricular activities will all be considered when evaluating candidates.
COMPENSATION
Hourly rate is $15 per hour. Benefits include access to farm produce, paid sick leave, and a 20% discount at the CCFEC farmstand and café.
