Job Description:
Title: 8.01 School Bus Driver
Reports To: Transportation Supervisor and Local Superintendent.
Employment Status: Part Time (approximately 23 - 25 hours per week)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Qualifications: 1. Valid driver’s license.
2. Completion of satisfactory pre-employment driver’s training program, basic and advanced bus driver’s education program; bus driver’s certificate; valid CDL.
3. High school graduate or equivalent.
4. Between ages of 18 and 65 years.
5. Be physically qualified as determined by an annual physical examination.
6. Good health, high moral character, and good attendance record.
General Description: Responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of school pupils within the guidelines of the State of Ohio and the policies established by the local board of education; maintaining discipline on the bus; promoting good public relations by neat appearance, proper attitude, and appearance of the school bus.
Essential Functions:
1. Safety check of the school bus, as required by State of Ohio Regulation 3301-83-11, before each run--
a. Board the bus at least ten (10) minutes before the scheduled morning departure and at least five (5) minutes before departing the parking area in the afternoon.
b. In cold weather, warm up the engine gradually. Do not race the engine. Be sure windshield, side windows, and all mirrors are clear.
c. Complete established pre-trip inspection: before starting on a scheduled bus route to pick up or discharge pupils, the driver shall check headlights, tail and stop lights, warning lights, directional lights, tires, horn, windshield wipers, heater and defroster, dashboard gauges, steering, brakes, or any other feature which may affect the safe, efficient operation of the vehicle;
d. Reports equipment malfunctions on proper forms and give to bus mechanic.
2. Responsible for safe operating condition (1. c.) and for the cleanliness of the bus.
3. Makes necessary inspections and safety checks prior to scheduled run, reports any equipment malfunction on provided form to the bus mechanic.
4. Maintains pupil control and reports any violations to the proper authorities as prescribed (principal, transportation supervisor/director, and so forth).
5. Maintains routes, stops, and time schedules as established by the director/supervisor. Make suggestions for more efficient routing but permission must be granted prior to any change(s).
6. Reports any hazardous conditions along the existing route to the supervisor/director
7. Follows properly approved procedures for reporting bus accidents; forms provided.
8. Will be present or available at all bus driver meetings and in the event of emergency dismissal.
9. Notifies the supervisor/director or designee in case of illness daily or of continued illness so as to permit time to secure a substitute driver.
10. Promotes good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, conversation, and the appearance of the school bus.
11. Shares in the responsibility for driving for a school-sponsored event and/or approved field trip.
12. Shall conduct a minimum of two (2) rear door emergency evacuation drills on each school bus run each year.
13. Shall be required to attend one (1) annual county-sponsored safety inservice.
14. Prepares reports, route maps, schedules, pupil lists, and accident reports as required by the State of Ohio, Ohio Department of Education, and the local board of education.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings;
2. Helps instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values; and
3. Conducts other duties related to the driver’s duties as assigned by the supervisor/director, assistant superintendent, and/or local superintendent of schools.
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
2. Occasional operation of a school bus under inclement weather conditions.
3. Occasional interaction among unruly children.
