Position Summary:
The purpose of the Grossing Technician I is to provide general assistance to Pathologists' Assistants and pathologists to ensure smooth work flow of the entire grossing department in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of work. Under the supervision of the Grossing Supervisor and general technical direction of pathologists, the Gross Tech I is responsible for the accurate description and dissection of simple surgical specimens. The Grossing Technician must adhere to HIPAA standards. Due to various environmental hazards presented in the workplace such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc., employees must also adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures and Personal Protective Equipment requirements.
Position Schedule: Initial training period of M-F 2pm - 10:30pm for about a month~ will then switch to a permanent shift of M-F 4pm - 12:30am.
Essential Duties:
- Gross simple to moderately complex specimens
- Troubleshoot dictation, accessioning, technical & communication issues
- Gross photography
- Handling of certain tissue types for special studies
- Possible rotation at nearby neighbor clinic
- Assist in training of new staff and competency assessments as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Basic PC skills including Microsoft Office Suite, and ability to learn new software
- Demonstrate ability to perform effectively under pressure
- Adaptable
- Ability to focus on task at hand
Qualifications/Experience:
- Bachelor's degree science related field (preferably biology or physiology); OR
- Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include:
- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses
- OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
- In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above)
- OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity
