Position Summary:
The responsibility of a Histology Specialist is to prepare and process tissue samples for pathologists to exam and interpret. In addition to be able to perform all Histology Technician job functions, Histology Specialist assists with specialized tasks and projects, as well as assists in developing and updating laboratory procedures. Prioritization and self-management are key skills required of the Histology Specialists at this level. All Histology Specialists must adhere to strict HIPAA standards as well as Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. Environmental hazards such as formalin, communicable disease, fresh human tissue, etc. are present in the workplace.
Position schedule: 11:30am to 8:00pm
Essential Duties:
Histology Specialist may perform any of the following duties or groups of duties:
- Performs IHC validation, antibody development, and quality control of IHC stains
- Prepares, organizes, and maintains tissue control blocks
- Performs reagent and antibody validation of new reagents and antibodies
- Cuts IHC controls and IHC cases
- Performs decons on IHC Instruments
- Fills in and assists IHC bench technologists when needed
- Tracks and records instrument issues
- Assists in training of department employees as needed
- Attends and participates in weekly meetings and huddles
- Puts away supplies as needed
- Participates in special projects as assigned
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
- Positive and mature attitude with the ability to lead others in a positive and proactive manner
- Must be detail oriented
- Ability to learn new computer software
- Must be able to plan ahead, prioritize job tasks, and meet deadlines
- Understand and respect time constraints and deadlines for team members both in and outside of the department
- Strong time management and organization skills with the ability to multitask
- Effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Be able to perform well and in a positive and professional manner under pressure and with large work volumes
- Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve
Qualifications/Experience:
- HT/HTL (ASCP) certification required
- 3 years of work experience as Histology Technician required
- Associates/Bachelor's degree in science preferred
- Completion of Gross Tech I training preferred
