Our organization operates the California Research and Education Network (CalREN), a high-capacity computer network with more than 8,000 miles of optical fiber. The network serves over 20 million users across California, including the vast majority of K-20 students together with educators, researchers, and individuals at other vital public-serving institutions.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Network Architect will play a key role in providing technical expertise in planning, designing, implementing, and optimizing the network that CENIC manages. There will be a focus on automation, security, scalability, and efficiency. The position will work closely with internal and external team members on projects to push the network to the forefront and provide the most value to the community.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None
LOCATION: Hybrid
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Oversee and plan activities to create and maintain project deliverables for network design initiatives and assigned individual initiatives
Facilitate and lead team members in determining architecture goals, cost-estimating solutions, and reviewing existing network deployments for potential improvements to design, availability, capacity management, and cost management
Serve as the last level of internal escalation during after-hour incidents
Assist the Software Development team in automating the provisioning, deployment, and auditing of the infrastructure by developing proof of concepts of automation solutions
Documenting the network architecture and processes to ensure that they are well understood and can be easily maintained by other team members and other teams
Keeping up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in the Service Provider Networking industry to continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team's processes and infrastructure
Occasional travel to conferences to advocate for and connect with the community
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:
Deep understanding of Network Engineering principles
Possesses a positive mindset and spotlight opportunities that others may overlook
Strong people skills and the ability to diplomatically resolve conflicts
Experience designing and implementing IP Peering Connectivity with other Cloud, Content, and Service providers
Experience designing and implementing MPLS Networks such as Segment Routing MPLS
Experience designing and implementing MPLS VPN Services such as IPVPN and EVPN
Experience designing and implementing MPLS Traffic Engineering
Experience using Python for programmatic access to tools to generate reports and dashboards
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering and/or Computer Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience
At least 10 years of Network Engineering experience
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Experience working in Service Provider networks
Experience managing network devices running IOS XR and Junos
Experience designing and implementing Optical DWDM Networks

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position operates in a professional office environment with standard office equipment including computers, telephones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.
WORK HOURS:
The regular workweek is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Ability to work evenings and weekends for problem resolutions, upgrades, etc., based on CENIC s business demands.
