What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Success Specialist position at Centenary University?
JOB SUMMARY
The Student Success Specialist is part of the Academic Success and Advising Center staff. Responsibilities include academic coaching, direct services, case management, and advocacy for students with disabilities.
The University reserves the right to change or assign other duties to this position.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND TASKS:
- Maintain a caseload of Project Able students for which the requirements are to deliver direct instruction in learning strategies, study skills, and adaptive technology to students enrolled in Project Able in weekly meetings. Assist students in locating and utilizing services outside of ASAC, such as but not limited to Counseling and Health Services. Communicate with faculty, staff, and students’ families about the individual needs and appropriate accommodation for the student. Review and evaluate documentation and educational records to determine and substantiate appropriate accommodations and instructional strategies. Assist students win advocating and receiving appropriate accommodations especially in regard to arranging exams with accommodations as well as notetaking.
- Assist in the accommodation process for students with disabilities (who may or may not be enrolled in Project Able) for which the requirements could be reviewing documentation for accommodation determinations. This includes both academic and housing accommodations.
- Complete Record Review number 1 for students (applicants) with disabilities.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of Project Able and STEP Ahead program which includes developing workshops to meet the needs of students enrolled in these programs.
- Assist with recruitment for Project Able and STEP Ahead by attending Open Houses, College Nights, Disability Service specific events on campus, and various other events as invited by local high schools, and Admissions staff at Centenary.
- Provide academic advising to incoming Freshman and follow up services prior to the student entering Centenary in the Fall semester.
- Create and implement workshops and trainings for students and faculty/staff to enhance opportunities for student success.
- Provide academic coaching to graduate and undergraduate students in the traditional university.
- Maintain records database information, and provide reports regarding attendance, academic progress, and retention.
- Participate in staff meetings within the Academic Success and Advising Office and function as a support team member.
- Available to teach courses during working hours in lieu of other responsibilities as needed.
- Provide content tutoring through the Tutoring Center, as needed.
- If necessary, proctor, scribe, and or read exams aloud.
- Engage in Professional Development in disability related areas.
- Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Disability Services.
JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Participate in recruitment, program planning, and support of students in the intensive support service programs (Project Able and STEP Ahead).
- Engage in professional development in disability related areas.
- Provide support to Centenary University students, including graduate students, by making sure they understand and receive appropriate accommodations in all of their courses.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledgeable about disability law and experience working with people with disabilities. Has good interpersonal skills (good at problem solving, empathetic) and excellent oral and written communication skills. Is proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, adaptive technology, and scheduling tools.
- Has strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task
EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE/PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS
Required: Master’s degree in counseling, Psychology, Special Education, Social Work, Rehabilitation,
Higher Education, Student Development
Preferred: 3-5 years working in an educational setting working with persons with disabilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
There are occasional weekends and evenings that are necessary to represent the Academic and Advising Center and or the Disability Services Office. There might also be evening and weekend requirements during the Step Ahead program in July.
