The Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) provides university-wide leadership to develop and implement academic programs that promote student success. The VPAA reports directly to the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and serves on the President’s Cabinet. The Vice President for Academic Affairs is responsible for articulating Centenary’s academic vision and working collaboratively with deans, directors, department chairs, and faculty developing and implementing instructional programs, budgets, and academic policies.

All undergraduate and graduate programs report to the VPAA through five academic units : the School of Business, Media, & Writing (BMW); the School of Education & Humanities (EDHU); the Department of Equine Studies (EST); the School of Natural, Health, Social & Behavioral Sciences (NHSB); and the Department Fine Arts (THA). Additional academic support units report to the VPAA : the Office of the Registrar, and Taylor Memorial Library. The Centenary Stage Company reports to the VPAA through the Chair of Fine Arts.

Responsibilities

The Vice President for Academic Affairs :

  • Provides leadership for academic program planning and development, educational policy, program assessment, and faculty and staff development.
  • Serves as the lead for academic initiatives as part of the Centenary Strategic Plan.
  • Makes final recommendations to the Vice President and COO and President on all personnel matters in the areas under Academic Affairs, including appointments, reappointments, awarding of tenure, salaries and raises, ranks and promotions, leaves of absence and retirement.
  • Develops long- and short-range plans for the curriculum, staffing, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness, and improving educational quality and offerings.
  • Provides leadership to the faculty and makes final recommendations to the President on curriculum matters.
  • Serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet.
  • Administers the academic policies and requirements of the university.
  • Promotes excellence in teaching and scholarship and the effective use of online learning technologies.
  • Ensures on-going program assessment at the university and program levels that lead to necessary changes and improvements.
  • Develops budgets and monitors expenditures for all Academic Affairs units, coordinating with the Vice President for Business and Finance. Serves as a member of the University Budget Review Committee.
  • Serves as the liaison to the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Provides oversight of academic support services including the Taylor Memorial Library, and the Office of the Registrar and the Dean of Academic Assessment and Faculty Development.
  • Works with university colleagues, including cabinet, to provide leadership and to foster collaboration throughout the institution, including the VPAA’s presence at appropriate campus events.
  • Serves as a voting member of the Curriculum Committee.
  • Advises the President and Cabinet on all matters related to academic programs, including curriculum; faculty selection, development, and retention; and new program development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution is required.
  • A significant and progressive record of higher education leadership appropriate for service in this role. A minimum of 10 years of related work experience in higher education settings.
  • A minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience (Dean, Assistant or Associate Vice President or above).
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others and to lead multiple units and people to work together successfully.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead within a system of shared governance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of institutional curricular structure and development at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated understanding and strong commitment to cultural diversity.
  • Experience in program planning, development and evaluation, curriculum design, faculty evaluation and development, program assessment and resource management.
  • Demonstrated ability to place the mission of the university above the mission of an individual unit within the university.
  • Knowledge of current trends in higher education and significant experience with assessment, student learning outcomes, and pedagogy.
  • A leadership style that fosters collaboration, respect, and teambuilding.
