The Ophthalmology Clinical Assistant will provide essential support to ophthalmologists and the clinical team by assisting with patient care, performing administrative duties, and ensuring smooth operation within the ophthalmology practice.
What You'll Do:
- Perform routine and diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, lensometry, visual field testing, and OCT imaging
- Accurately scribe/document physician findings and testing results (exam, imaging, etc.)
- Assist the ophthalmologist during examinations by providing the required instruments, documenting findings in real-time, and assisting with treatments, such as minor surgical procedures such as cataract surgeries or injections
- Counsel patients about various in-office procedures, surgery, IOL options after physician encounter
- Provide detailed explanations about upcoming procedures, including what patients should expect and how to prepare
- Ensure smooth patients flow throughout the clinic by managing the technician workflow
- Set up examination rooms, ensuring all necessary tools (e.g., ophthalmoscopes, tonometers) are clean, functional, and readily available. This includes sterilizing instruments to adhere to health and safety protocols
- Provide patients with pre- and post-procedure instructions, ensuring they understand their treatment plans, medication regimens, and follow-up care, etc
- Act as a liaison between patients, referring doctors, pharmacies, and other healthcare departments, (e.g., imaging centers, surgery centers), ensuring that prescriptions, test results, and follow-up instructions are efficiently communicated
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of and experience with Simon Eye Patient Service Center systems and processes. They should also have at least six months’ experience supervising or providing task direction to others. They should also be familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive patient information with discretion
- Strong collaborating skills, and an ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- The ability to work comfortablyin a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines; high energy, self-motivated and proactive
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to multitask and be flexible regarding workload and assignments
- Ability to exercise judgment
- Must be organized, flexible and dedicated to quality service delivery
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively
- Proficiency in knowledge of medical terminology, particularly in ophthalmology
- Ability to provide guidance, direction and technical support to staff
