The Center for AI Safety (CAIS) is a leading research and advocacy organization dedicated to reducing societal-scale risks from AI. We tackle the toughest AI challenges through a combination of technical and policy solutions, working closely with our sister organization, the CAIS Action Fund.
As part of our mission, CAIS is launching a new online platform dedicated to high-quality journalism and analysis on AI’s impacts on national security, politics, and the economy. This platform will publish timely analysis of AI policy and industry developments, opinion pieces from leaders in the field, and explainers distilling key insights from cutting-edge research. Our goal is to foster a more nuanced and well-informed public conversation on AI. It aims to be accessible to a broad audience and bridge the worlds of policy, national security, and research.
We are seeking a Senior Editor to play a central role in shaping the publication’s editorial direction and ensuring that all published content meets the highest standards of clarity, accuracy, and insight. The Senior Editor will be responsible for reviewing and screening pitches, editing articles from in-house journalists and guest writers, and maintaining a steady pipeline of high-impact pieces.
This role requires a sharp editorial instinct, an ability to refine complex topics into compelling narratives, and strong collaboration skills to engage with both journalists and subject-matter experts. This position is open to both remote and on-site candidates, but to ensure seamless collaboration, applicants must be based in U.S. time zones.
Key responsibilities include :
- Review and evaluate pitches from external contributors, selecting the most insightful and relevant pieces for publication
- Edit and refine articles from in-house journalists and guest contributors, ensuring clarity, coherence, and alignment with editorial standards
- Provide structural and substantive edits, offering detailed feedback to strengthen arguments, storytelling, and readability
- Ensure all content meets rigorous fact-checking and sourcing standards, working with contributors to verify claims and data
- Engage with a network of journalists, analysts, and thought leaders to cultivate a pipeline of high-quality submissions
- Work closely with external writers to develop article ideas, shape narratives, and refine arguments
- Maintain strong relationships with contributors, providing guidance, editorial expectations, and feedback to improve future submissions
- Maintain an efficient editorial workflow, ensuring articles progress smoothly from pitch to publication while meeting deadlines
- Collaborate with the Managing Editor to maintain an editorial calendar, ensuring a steady flow of fresh, high-quality content
- Work with designers and multimedia producers to integrate visuals, graphics, and interactive elements where relevant
- Assist in developing editorial guidelines and best practices to ensure consistency and quality across all content
