Position Description

This position announcement will be used to fill a Full-time, Regular, Represented, Safety Sensitive Automotive Mechanic I vacancy in the Department of Central Services, Fleet Division.

This is mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.

NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK

Work involves responsibility for participating in the mechanical repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive equipment including passenger cars, trucks, tractors, and related standard and specialized equipment. Initially, work is closely supervised; as proficiency is gained, employees are expected to perform routine repair assignments independently. Employees assist higher-level mechanics in complex repair work, or perform complex repairs under supervision. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for quality of workmanship.

Examples Of Duties And Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Tune engines, gap and replace spark plugs, change brakes, change tires, change batteries.

Basic PM Services to include changing oil, filters, wiper blades.

Inspect, adjust, and replace parts as necessary; parts may include brakes, cooling, ignition, electrical, and fuel systems, mufflers, and exhaust pipes.

Assists higher-level mechanics in complex repairs and major overhaul work.

Performs related work as required

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge of the methods, tools, and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.

Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment.

Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific problems.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications and diagrams.

POSITIONS IN THIS CLASS ARE REQUIRED TO LIFT TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT WEIGHING FIFTY POUNDS, AND TO CLIMB ONTO AND MANEUVER AROUND EQUIPMENT.

Minimum Qualifications

Sufficient education to read and interpret automotive repair manuals; six (6) or more months in basic automotive repair and maintenance; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license.

NOTE: Automotive Mechanic I is the entry performance proficiency level class of mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment. An employee has the opportunity to advance through the series based upon experience and satisfactory work performance to the Automotive Mechanic II (journey level) and Automotive Mechanic III (full performance) levels. Promotion to a higher-level class in the series is at the discretion of the appointing authority.

NOTE: Longevity pay is available based on years of service.

NOTE: This is a Safety-Sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and Alcohol testing.

NOTE: This position may involve night shift hours of 3:30 pm to Midnight.

Supplemental Qualifications

Preference will be given to those possessing diesel engine experience.

Preference will be given to any participants of any internship programs offered by the County.
