Position Summary:
Center For Family Services is seeking a full time Peer Recovery Specialist for it's Camden County Re-Entry Program. The Peer Support Specialist will support individuals with substance use disorders that are currently incarcerated and during their transition back into the community. The expectation of the position is to provide peer recovery/reentry support both inside the correctional facility and post-release. This is a full-time position that requires close coordination and collaboration with client, aiding clients with navigating resources and providing peer support specialist expertise through lived experience. The overarching goal is to aide individuals in remaining arrest and incarceration free and to encourage continued counseling and treatment for substance use disorders.
Duties and Responsibilities
- In collaboration with the individual, assist in development and enhancement of a comprehensive recovery plan by identifying resources, including community programs and agencies, and overcoming barriers to effectively execute that plan.
- Engage the individual and establish rapport as evidenced by empathic and active listening, communicating in a nonjudgmental way, recognizing addictive behavior etc
- Educate the individuals on how to appropriately navigate treatment, social service and recovery support systems
- Recognize signs and symptoms of addiction with sensitivity to cultural and environmental differences.
- Provide recovery support services based on the individual's preference and his/her needs
- Support individuals as they move through the stages of change to encourage them in their recovery
- Demonstrate ability and motivation to overcome challenges and barriers following a period of incarceration and/or post-criminal justice involvement.
- Assist individuals with accessing recovery support services in the community
- Ability to recognize emergency and crisis situations and respond appropriately.
- Work collaboratively with the Case Manager to ensure the individual engages in services up to one year if needed
- Utilize the case management system to record engagement and interactions with program participants and track key program goals, objectives, and outcomes.
- Be a positive role model by sharing experiential knowledge, hope, and skills
- Maintain relationships with the individual in order to assist him/her in the treatment engagement and retention process
- Reinforce, guide, and ensure the individual that recovery is possible, and is built on multiple strengths, coping abilities, and the resources of each individual
- Assist in the education for the individual, their family, and the community about the disease of addiction and the recovery process.
- Assist in establishing and sustaining a social and physical environment supportive of recovery
- Enhance identification and participation in the recovery community;
- Advocate for appropriate and effective community treatment and recovery
- Empower individuals to make self-determined and self-directed choices about their recovery pathway
- Provide support with face to face sessions and/or telephone support based on individual's personal choice;
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent. Associate's degree or higher preferred
- Must have a state certification as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist
- Two years experience
- Must have an understanding of Medication Assisted Treatment, 12 Step Recovery and other recovery supports.
- Demonstrates maturity and experience in successfully raising/working with individuals with co-occuring substance use and mental health disorders.
- Must be capable of interacting and engaging with all clients, correctional staff, and community partners with respect and courtesy.
- Must be comfortable and able to utilize lived recovery or incarceration experiences to support, guide, and assist others
- Must be capable of critical thinking, problem solving, and self-motivation.
- Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must possess computer literacy skills
- Must be willing to work weekends and evening hours when required.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Ability to act effectively as a role model for a diverse group of adults.
- Requires car, valid registration, insurance and driver's license.
- Must be willing to travel in the community
