In detail: The Medical Assistant is primarily responsible for assisting the provider in the examination and treatment of patients and maintaining patient flow, while treating the patients with care and concern.
Supervision Received: Administrator / Managing Provider
Essential Job Duties:
- Must maintain confidentiality in all clinical activities and communication.
- Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with providers, patients, patient families, visitors and co-workers in a professional and confident manner.
- Prepares exam and procedure rooms for patient use, ensuring that all supplies and instruments are stocked at adequate par levels on a daily basis and throughout the day.
- Reviews charts daily for patients scheduled with provider, tracking lab results and other documentation as needed.
- Greets patient from waiting room, obtains height, weight and blood pressure on all patients, allergic reactions, and chief complaint/reason for visit.
- Completes all required charting and documentation according to clinic guidelines and the direction of the physician.
- Administers injections, draws blood, removes sutures and staples, and completes necessary forms according to Clinic policies and procedures to ensure services are completed according to coding and billing guidelines.
- Answers patient calls with clinically related questions, to assist the provider in providing ongoing care and treatment of patients.
- Calls patients with lab results and instructions as directed by physician.
- Knowledge of emergency equipment (location and use) and assist with codes and fire drills and actual situations.
- Maintain cleanliness in all patient care areas, alerting cleaning service to special needs, and providing basic cleaning duties at the end of each patient care day.
- Recognize and take action on potentially unsafe acts and conditions.
- Maintains quality control logs for all lab instruments and equipment.
Additional Job Duties:
- Provides ongoing patient education and advocates for patient needs with providers and other available social and medical services.
- Flexibility to work at two locations.
- Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
- Occasionally lifting, help with transferring patients.
- Helps maintain inventory counts and informs purchasing agent of supplies needed.
- Attend employee meetings and in-services as required by Administrator.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must have a minimum of the following qualifications:
- MA must have a certification from an accredited school
- Certified in first aid and CPR (preferred)
- One to two years' experience in a clinical setting
- Ability to learn and retain information and procedures
- Excellent communication skills and display professional appearance
- Excellent computer navigation skills and previous EHR experience
- Must be responsible and accountable for his/her medical judgments, actions and competence
- Proficient in the use of office equipment (phones, computers and paging system)
ADA Requirements:
- Frequent mobility and/or sitting for extended periods of time
- Manual dexterity for taking and recording patient vitals
- Some bending and stooping required
- Some help with lifting patients
- Occasional stress from dealing directly with patients and working in a busy clinical setting
- Physically capable of listening
- Physically capable of reading and reviewing written communications
