Summary: A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (Ultrasound Tech) provides diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating results of diagnostic examinations using sonography. The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is also responsible for daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, patients schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The Sonographer always maintains a high standard of medical ethics and is self-motivated to increase the level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease and new procedures as they evolve.
Education: ARDMS certified; must have one ultrasound registry, Associates Degree and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography preferred. Must have or be able to obtain CPR certification within 6 months.
Certification Requirements: ARDMS certified; must have at minimum one ultrasound registry
Experience: Prior experience using computer software, preferably electronic medical records.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform Ultrasound exams to include Echocardiograms, Abdominal Ultrasound (ABD, RUQ, and Renal), Pelvis Ultrasound (Transabdominal and Transvaginal), Small parts Ultrasound (Thyroid, Scrotum, various areas of interest), Lower Extremity Arterial Doppler, Lower Extremity Venous Doppler, Extracranial Doppler, Vascular/Cardiac Pedoff, TCD, Upper Extremity Arterial Doppler, Upper Extremity Venous Doppler, and Renal Artery Doppler.
- Efficient in operating ultrasound equipment, selecting the right technical factors for obtaining highest quality ultrasound images.
- Order ultrasound supplies. Keep work area clean and stocked with necessary supplies. Assure equipment is in good working order and notify supervisor of any malfunctions.
- Assure images and preliminary information (sonographer worksheets) are delivered to reading physicians as soon as possible, but no later than the end of the workday. Currently images are sent through the Cardiac and Radiology PACS systems.
- Assure diagnostic reports are received for ultrasound studies in a timely manner. Each sonographer is responsible for filling out the correct imaging tracker form for each exam done each day.
- Adheres to infection control guidelines
- Communicates effectively to the patient at his/her level of understanding.
- Always Maintains patient confidentiality; adheres to HIPAA guidelines
- Maintain current credentials (registry certifications) for Ultrasound.
- Maintain appropriate CME's that are required by appropriate accreditation bureaus.
- Ensure smooth patient flow throughout the office by assisting in other areas when needed or as requested.
- Promotes positive public relations with patients, visitors, families, physicians, and others. Exhibits characteristics consistent with CPC values for quality, respect, teamwork, and pride.
- Physical appearance and conduct are consistent with acceptable professional ethics and CPC standards.
- Maintains operations by following policies and procedures, reporting needed changes and making suggestions for improvement
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
