The Center for Women and Families - Lead Emergency Shelter Advocate

The Center for Women and Families provides free services to people of all identities who have experienced intimate partner violence and sexual assault; we help our clients and their dependent children become survivors through trauma-informed advocacy. Our goal is to mitigate the impact of their trauma by reducing their risk factors and building their resiliency. We serve anyone in Jefferson, Bullitt, Spencer, Shelby, Oldham, Henry and Trimble counties in Kentucky and Floyd and Clark counties in Indiana.

The Lead Emergency Shelter Advocate (ESA) is responsible for training and monitoring new staff. They model exemplary performance of all staff and volunteers and provides shift oversight to Emergency Shelter operations and engages in Emergency Shelter program initiatives. The Lead ESA is responsible for actively assessing the needs of the shelter community and supporting staff, while managing a caseload of clients with minimal direct supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct Client Services : Provide crisis intervention, safety planning, case management, counseling, de-escalation, transportation, advocacy, information, referrals, and supportive services.
  • Guide new employees and volunteers through new advocate and departmental training. Set benchmarks for expectations and communicate additional training needs to supervisor and director.
  • Regularly review and make recommendations to training curriculum to ensure it stays current with Center processes and policies.
  • Complete weekly case plans, client-centered sessions, bi-weekly assessments, and transition plans.
  • Conduct intakes, exits, agreements, and conflict resolution.
  • Support shift lead, groups, walk-in clients, child enrichment, pet needs, and shelter space readiness.
  • Assists with client desk, call center and hospital advocacy coverage as needed.
  • Engage volunteers and community partners.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to teammates on their work at the agency.
  • Engage as an active contributor to Emergency Shelter and Centerwide initiatives.
  • Coordinate and monitor peer to peer shadowing with co-workers.
  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree. A minimum of 3 years of experience in a related field may be substituted for a degree.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a driving record that meets CWF automobile insurance requirements.
  • Fluency in languages other than English are a plus.
  • The Center requires the basic round of COVID vaccinations and highly recommends boosters.
