Position Summary:

The Lead Teaching assistant reports to the Program Manager and helps to create a safe and successful environment for COCA Summer Arts Camps. The Lead Teaching Assistant will be responsible for assisting in the oversight of COCA’s Teaching Assistants. This position works closely with the Assistant Camp Manager to ensure camps are classrooms are set up correctly and efficiently. The position is seasonal. Work would Begin Mid-May and run through August. Camp Dates are May 27-August 15. This position works 7:30am-3:00pm

  • Help with site, room and staff preparation before camps begin for the summer.
  • Support the Program Manager in designing and leading teaching assistant orientations in May. This includes being onsite for orientation and being prepared to speak to the attending Teaching Assistants.
  • Be flexible on a daily basis to sub camps as needed.
  • Maintain order among campers and ensure adherence to safety rules and operating procedures.
  • Support the work of Teaching Artists by providing 1:1 assistance to students, as needed due to illness or behavior concerns.
  • Supervise lunch with Teaching Assistants each day.
    • Serve as the key point person in ensuring students find seats, safely eat lunch, and return to their PM Camps.
    • Provide guidance and direction to the Teaching Assistants who are assigned to lunch.
    • Lead the distribution of campers back to their assigned PM Camps.
  • Supervise Pickup and Drop-off.
    • Assist the Program Manager in ensuring campers get to and from camp safely.
    • Help with the pickup and drop-off line.
    • Help to control the flow of families coming in and out of the building.
  • Supervise the Teaching Assistants charged with running Before Care to ensure that student supervision before camps is enjoyable and safe.
    • Help TA’s Manage any before care behavior challenges and see that children are appropriately supervised.
    • Observe Teaching Assistants to ensure that structure is maintained.
    • Help Teaching Assistants get campers to their morning camps.
    • This will require you to be present in before care each camp day.
  • Create the weekly Teaching Assistant Schedule and lead the weekly Teaching Assistant meeting in collaboration with the Program Manager.
  • Ensure Teaching Assistant questions are responded to. Help route questions to the appropriate contacts.
  • Support the Assistant Camp Manager in maintaining the supply room and camp cabinets.
  • Support the Assistant Camp Manager in creating the weekly supply crates.
  • Ensure weekly culinary orders are properly put away and organized.
  • Work with Program Manager, Assistant Camp Manager, and Operations to organize and supervise the end of summer camp clean up after camps conclude for the summer.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Education and/ or Qualifications:

  • Two (2) or more years of relevant experience in a camp setting is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Experience working with school-aged children, ranging in ages three through eighteen years old is required.
  • Experience handling behavioral issues with children.
  • Strong interest in and experience with the arts.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational skills including: stooping, kneeling, walking, lifting, grasping, pulling, standing, and talking.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds
  • Must be able to walk up and down stairs
  • Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force and/or constant force to move objects.
  • This position is required to work on-site at COCA. This position is not eligible for remote work.
