Overview

Maintain the vessels in a state of readiness to perform work for customers as needed. Perform work as directed by Captain and/or Mate of vessel and assist deckhand/engineer as requested. Prepare and serve meals for vessel crew. Job includes pulling and handling heavy lines, wires, and hoses; working on oil and cargo barges; safely making and breaking tow with barges; general vessel maintenance; and other tasks that may be assigned from time to time.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve meals at hours directed by the vessel master.
  • Prepare and submit an accurate inventory of stores and submit to the office as directed.
  • Maintain linen supply and re-order as necessary.
  • Wash, clean, and mop as required the galley and related supply storage areas.
  • Clean, defrost and service refrigerators and freezers as required.
  • Ensure that all perishable food supplies are properly stowed.
  • Promptly clean and restow for reuse all items utilized in the performance of the cooking duties.
  • Perform work on deck during ship assists & making/breaking towing, handling lines, etc.
  • Perform general sanitary cleaning of work areas, crews quarters, heads, and showers including; emptying garbage, sweeping, mopping, and cleaning windows. These are shared duties between all Deck Crew members.
  • Perform outside deck maintenance, deck work, and cargo operations under the guidance of the Chief Mate.
  • May assist the Captain, Chief Mate, Chief Engineer, Deckhand/Engineer, Deckhand/Crane Operator or other crew members as directed in the performance of their work duties at any time during the tour of duty duration.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the vessel Master.

Qualifications

  • Valid Merchant Mariner Credential with a minimum or Ordinary Seaman endorsement required.
  • Valid first aid/CPR certificate required.
  • Valid TWIC required.
  • Must be capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without physical assistance by climbing up or down gangplank, Jacob's ladder, dock ladder, or vessel ladder. Must also be capable of boarding and entering a skiff from a dock or a boat unassisted.  Boarding and exiting can occur in all weather conditions.
  • Must be capable of following specific written, oral, and visual directions in the event of an emergency. Must meet at designated locations to receive instructions and place on a life vest or jacket and/or survival suit without assistance.  Must be able to walk without assistance to any assigned life boat station or life craft for boarding.
  • Must be able to climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs or vertical ladders both inside and outside the vessel in all weather conditions and at temperatures ranging from normal or room temperature to 30 degrees below zero.
  • Must be able to assist in all cargo handling operations during the term of duty, including carrying lashing gear, ladders, climbing up and down ladders, moving from barge to dock and dock to barge, etc.
  • Must be able to share room assignments and bathroom facilities and eat in a common dining area with other crew. Must be capable of using an upper bunk without the aid of a ladder.
  • Must be capable of working and living on board a vessel for the tour of duty duration.
  • Must be able to lift or pull ship assist lines, tug lines, barge lines, towing gear such as shackles, chain, wire rope, etc.
  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds unassisted and carry up to 150 feet.

Job Condition and Environment

  • Utilize kitchen related appliances such as chef's knives, stove top and oven cooking & baking, food mixers, microwave ovens, and other small restaurant type related work equipment.
  • This position will also handle tug & barge lines, tug towing gear (e. g. shackles, wire rope, chain, etc.,), paint removal devices (e. g. grinders, needle guns, sanders, etc., ) handling container tag lines during cargo operations, other machinery and equipment as necessary in a towboat environment.
  • Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)
  • Must not be afraid of heights.

Expected Hours of Work

  • Normal rotation is 53 days on 53 days off.
  • 12 hours or more daily, as necessary for the duration of the tour of duty. During cargo operations extended hours on uneven shifts and erratic sleep patterns may be worked.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours.
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take call outs.
